It looks like we will have a dry day ahead for our ‘tiki tour ‘around Kent and perhaps even some sunshine as the day progresses. Despite the rest area where the Days Inn is located being busy we had a great night’s sleep and no noise at all from the place that goes 24/7. We haven’t bought another toaster after leaving the one we had in Europe at our last stay before we headed to Ireland. So this morning there is none of the traditional toast and jam rather Tesco croissants which while they were OK and filling didn’t have that ‘buttery ‘taste of the ones we enjoyed in France. We headed off down the M20 towards Ashford and took a stop in at the shopping mall. The locals in England haven’t really taken to Sunday ... read more

On the rainiest day of the trip so far we decided to keep our pre-arranged appointment for a trip down to the seaside resort of Margate - billed in the brochures as "the original seaside". There is some evidence for this claim. Even our business class mag in Emirates on the way over had a piece charting Margate's fall from holiday destination of choice for Poms in the early 20th century to economic irrelevance and now slow return to somewhere a little more hip and happening once again. A long closed theme park, Dreamland, is being reinvented as a 'heritage' attractions and is servo reopen next year. Even on the Monday of a long weekend here there is a fast train every hour from the centre of London (and slow ones more often), and we made ... read more

April 29, 2012 – Margate Here we are in Margate, visiting with my cousin Susan Marsh, her husband Eric and son Stephen. We have been so humbled and grateful to Susan, Eric and Stephen for taking the time to meet us in Margate, and so kindly show us the town. We saw the home that my Grandfather lived in, and the RAF base where he worked – we think prior to 1920. We visited the Tate Gallery, where a Turner exhibition is on display, and also Rodin's sculpture “The Kiss” (our bit of culture!) and museums at the airfield. But so far, the most astonishing thing we've seen is the Shell Grotto. The Shell Grotto is situated on Shell Grotto Hill, Margate (a small back street in the middle of town) – and is absolutely amazing. ... read more

Sorry Kent ... I found you mind numbingly boring with flat, uninteresting countryside and none of the quaint I associate with English seaside locations. We were hiking from Herne Bay back to Margate and expecting a seaside path i was so disappointed to find myself walking along a wide, concrete path on a gray day. The most excitement I got from the hike was dodgy warning signs and jumping a bus back to Margate from Birchington-on-sea. My pics I think tell that story well enough ... I took few, was uninspired by most of them and just wanted to get back to the hostel for a nap. Lucky the trip was an excuse for the hiking communit social event of the year ... Halloween ... the annual party which is just an excuse for a bunch ... read more

This is a tester to get used to using this website. For those who haven't been listening to me drone on about it for the last 6 months, I'm about to go on a 3 month trip to southern africa to do voluntary work and some independant travel. I'll be in Swaziland for 6 weeks, 4 weeks of which will be spent doing building work for vulnerable children through i-to-i. I then fly to Malawi, where I will take part in Malaria prevention work for 4 weeks, followed by 3 weeks of travelling round the country. So it's only 3 days to go and i'm getting excited, jittery, nervous, expectant and scared all at the same time. I've read other recent blogs about Swaziland and it's pretty cold at night so i'm still not sure if ... read more

Friday (09/05/08) - The end of the trip! This day was a strange mixture of feelings for me. On one hand I felt “oh God, already?” and on the other: “Finally, it’s over!”. Alberto and I were driven to Vere Road at ten past eight to put away our luggage. After that school started (again…) at 9 o’clock. I forgot to mention that we were already in our proper skill level groups by this time. The lessons were probably one of the most boring experience in my life. We were trying to retype word for word a 10 line text. I really don’t get the point of this type of exercise. I mean I think that it doesn’t matter how you rewrite (or retype word for word…) a text as long as it get’s the general ... read more

Yes, unfortunately for us, our 6 week trip around Europe is over, and we are back in the UK at Rachel's mums (obviously I am not writing this in real time). Although 6 weeks in the normal world seems to fly past, by the time we got back we had felt like we had been away for much longer, and of course it seems like an eternity since we left Australia, although that was only really 2 weeks before the start of the trip. This is a good sign that we enjoyed ourselves and really did get to experience many, many different things while travelling. Some of you have sent messages to us about how relaxed we look (thanks for the messages) and it's true, we do really feel like we have had a great holiday, ... read more
