After receiving depressing confirmation on Thursday (10 January) that sadly the only way for Lavinia to carry a pregnancy safely will be to undergo a fourth operation to reconstruct and strengthen her uterus; or alternatively we will have to opt for surrogacy - we decided to try to lift our spirits by embarking on a weekend of walking with family and friends. For us we find that going for walks/hikes is an excellent way of trying to reduce our stress levels, it enables us to spend valuable time together and reflect on life. Saturday 12 January - After a leisurely lunch we headed out for a walk around the village of Leeds, in Kent - the home of Leeds Castle. It was great that we were joined by Steve's mum, Joan, her husband, John and Steve's ... read more

Our tickets are booked for 5th November and before we leave we need to finalise the sale of our house. We are waiting on tenterhooks as until contracts are exchanged either party can back out of the sale for no reason, we have already had this happen to us once this year (hence the late departure) and are hoping to hear this week. We have tentatively planned to move out on 20th October and will stay with Kerry and Dave for two weeks before we go. The weather here is wet, cold and miserable so we can't wait to find some bright sunny weather - we hope! ... read more

This will be my last blog. At least for a little while. Thanks for reading guys, just a few little bits and pieces to tidy up: What follows where we left off is many hours of painful waiting to get home. On buses, each second lasted for two. In airports, a five hour wait turned out to be eight. But we got there in the end and, safely back in the U.K., I remain the owner of all my belongings (apart from my sister's dictionary...) and all limbs. I'd say that deserves a round of applause. And so ends that little adventure. I had such an amazing time it would be very difficult to pick a "best moment" thing. The biking down Death Road ranks highly, as does deep political discussions with Bolivians over a ... read more

Today started early... I couldn't sleep last night and was up until at least 3am. Mom was snoring away next to me with apparently no problem sleeping. (don't tell her I said that... lol... I'm serious). Anyways, we got up at 7 so that we could be at the Victoria Coach Station by 8:45am. By the way, a coach station is a bus station. Yesterday the weather report said that it was supposed to be 52 degrees with a slight chance of rain. I should have known better. The slight chance of rain was correct but it was more like 40 degrees with 35mpg gusts of wind. All in all it wasn't a bad day though. Our tour started at Leeds Castle today which is actually a lot like the Piatt Castles in southern Ohio. It ... read more

This was my first journey into the English countryside. Unfortunately, I had to leave Ailsa behind as she'd found work and I had a Monday to myself while I waited for my first contract to start. So I took the train with Shivir, a fellow contractor who was travelling to Maidstone to an Interview with a Local Council. I was eager to get out of London, if only for a few hours and I found that Leeds Castle was near(ish) to Maidstone so we agreed to go visit after his interview. We made a rather odd pair, he in his business suit and me in my Aussie tourist garb, but we had a great time and I was so loathe to leave that we almost missed the last shuttle bus to the station. ... read more

By early October it was confirmed that we would be moving back to the States in November. We had wanted to take the Chunnel at least once so this was our last chance. As it was Rosanna’s birthday we also had something to celebrate. So on Saturday October 7th, her birthday, we drove to Calais and boarded the Chunnel shuttle train that carried cars. We waited an hour or more and then sat in our van the entire 30 minute trip to Folkestone. I determined that it was faster, cheaper, and more pleasant and productive to take the new ferries than the Chunnel. At least on the ferry you could walk around, see the White Cliffs of Dover as you approached, and shop and eat lunch on the ship, thereby avoiding having to spend an hour ... read more
