Friday 20 August
It felt like we were coming home! We had to wait for around an hour for or transfer. The driver was good and told us stories and pointed places out to us. We arrived at the Thistle Marble Arc and were able to check in quickly. No view this time... just a dingy courtyard instead of Oxford Street. We took off straight away to catch the Hop On, Hop Off bus. First stop was Westminster Abbey. A beautiful church! Creepy though. We were walking over dead bodies everywhere. Lots of famous people buried there as well as historical figures. I wouldn't want to bethere at dark! There were crypts at every corner. Next stop was St Pauls. I liked this cathedral a lot. It was much lighter and brighter and spacious..... plus less dead people. All the marble everywhere was amazing. We climbed the 270 steps to the top of the dome. It wasn't so bad and there were about 3 different styles of steps, so it changed your footing along the way. The top of the dome point ws only a very tiny verandah ledge, so we were squeezed in. The view was fabulous. clear
shotsof London. Going down was much quicker! Aferwards, we went to a little Frenc cafe called Apostrophes. The toasted chicken, avo and rocket sandwich was just beautiful. very light. I had a lemonade stule drink that had ginger in it as well. A refreshing, nice drink! It was drizzling when we came out. The others wen off to do the Tower of London and I stayed on the South Bank of the Thames and walked along the river. It was relaxing. There was lots of open dining. The Tower Bridge was opening to let a boat through. I crossed the bridge and walked up to St Katharine's Docks. It was a nice little spot. Lots of little bridges to cross. I walked along the other side of the Thames and had an ice cream under the Tower Of London. A Crunchie with popping candy.. very weird!
We hopped back on the bus with the intention of going to Covent Gardens. I took us awhile to find it. It was a very hip and happening place. So many people! It would be a nice spot to sit for arvo drinks. We had a heck of a time finding our way back
to a bus stop (noone brought a map, did they?!) We walked...quickly... through Leicester Square. REALLY liked that part of town. We finally made it back to the hotel and went down to the Three Tuns for dinner. We were exhausted. I had a small fish and chips for 5.95. It was light and perfect. Just what I felt like. We went through 2 jugs of Pimms. VERY refreshing. We were so tired that it hit us though. Sad, since there's hardly any alcohol in it. 😊
Back to the hotel for a 2 hour nap before getting up to go party!
