So I thought I would start the travel blog a day early this time, even though I technically haven't left yet. Departure time is 1020 tomorrow morning, flying first into Helsinki then catching the flight to Beijing to eventually arrive there early on Saturday morning local time. It has been a mental week and to be honest I haven't really thought about leaving. Today has been spent sorting out last minute bits and once I am finished writing this I am going to attempt the dreaded packing, hoping it all fits into my backpack! My thinking is that if I can go away for 10 months with just my backpack then this should (in theory) be a breeze. We shall see! I have been told that gmail and facebook are no go areas on the internet ... read more

Hi all Today we visited the Victoria Memorial which was built and set up by the British as a memorial for the British in India. The building is an impressive piece of architecture and built all of marble. Queen Victoria welcomes you at the entrance and so does several other important persons who lived and "made"India. Sorry I have to go now they are closing!... read more

Hi all Thought it best to send the blog on as the lights keep dipping which is a sign of - yes loosing all I have typed. On the second night we visited a restuarant called Everest where we had the biggest steak our eyes ever saw. We all ordered steak - bearing in mind that the Ïndians"on our trip dont see beef at all so we had to have a steak. Well Maurice and Brian ordered a steak each that must have been a foot long with chips/boiled potatoes, mushrooms and veggies piled high to the sky. We others also had steak - the steak was so juicy and tender we simply couldnt believe it. We also had apple pie and ice cream - heaven had come at last.... The following morning we were up ... read more

Hi all Keep those comments coming nice to hear from you all. We the 6 of us were liking 6 students off on our first trip away from home. We were all so exicited and didnt know what to expect. Our flight to Nepal was full of security checks and the plane looked like it had done a bit too many trips. Anyway as we were driving thru Kathmandu our 4 friends were ohhhh - ahhhh along the road - they have been living in India a wee bit too long and were shop starved! The hotel was nice and could have done with a bit of decorating and the rooms needed a good updating, but then we really only slept there - hard bed an all. The electricty was so good that it couldnt even ... read more

Hi all Well we are in Nepal as from yesterday and this morning we took plane ride over Mnt Everest. It was exhaularating fascinating we woke up at 5am to make sure we got window seats (and the plane one had window seats!!?) by the time we were up in the air we were all on in the high. What a fantastic plane journey that was. You cant believe the beauty of it all. We took as many photos as our video would take until it died on us. The charging system in India is poor and this also applies to Nepal as well. We thought that there was a problem but because of all the power surges etc etc we have been battling with the charging of our camera and video. Anyway we love Kathmandu ... read more

In the afternoon we visited the Government Museum which has a large collection of wookwork, jewelry which is based on the beautify Rajasthani and Mughal blend. We saw how the created the beautiful precious stones from raw to the finished piece. We also saw some anazing pieces of jewellery. If I hadnt lost my lottery ticket I certainly would have gone mad in that shop. We also visited the working observatory which holds a showcase of scientific brilliance. This was created by Sawai Jai Sing - the founder of Jaipur. The scientific pieces are all in extra large sizes and is so accurate right down to the very second. We also visited a pure completely made of white marble temple which was buildt by TaTa - the founder of a trucking and car manufacturer and several ... read more

Hi again Still in Chandini Chowk - this was one the main markets of Delhi and had many beautiful fountains. Today the place is very crowded and congested. We also travelled to the president's residence which is an impressive piece of architecture. We also drove past the minsters and embassodors homes which were nice but nothing to rave about. Delhi is a very busy city but the pollution is too dreadful you have to experiencde it to believe it. Many people drive around with a face mask - there are thousands of tuc tuc - these are 3 wheeler taxis and although there is a seat for the driver and a seat for 2 at the back they can get as many as probably 12 in them!. They then have the normal taxi which takes me ... read more

It is a city of modern and old. Delhi has been the center of all activities at all times even when we arrived they were having a industrial strike. There was no metro nor were there any shops open. The hotel was the Connaught - we thought it was good for the purpose. Room a little small but otherwise it was fine. They had ... read more

Hi all Well thank goodness I listened to Maurice by going to Heathrow 2 hours earlier it took us 31/2 hrs from checking out cases in to going thru the scanning process. What a nightmare it was. Anyway I was a little nervous about our flight with Air India as I had many side looks when I said we were travelling with them, but we really couldnt fault them at all. The seats were great, the food was good the service was good, the plane was clean TV's worked (Air Emirates tvs didnt work going and 3 different air phones!!) the flight was very smooth and the staff were very plasant. We landed in Bombay with no problems at all the airport was very quiet perhaps because it was a Sunday and everyone was more interested ... read more
