The atmosphere in the whole of London was electric. Every window display in every shop had some tribute to the wedding. Flags were everywhere as were the souvenir sellers. Selfridges had a royal tea party going on in their window with masked royals acting out the scenes. We wanted to watch the events near to the action but with a big screen to have some idea what was going on. We got to the outskirts of Trafalger square and could see glimpses of the screen when tiptoeing and straining our necks. People were taking every vantage point possible from the top of shop verandas phone boxes lamp posts to even upturned metal shopping baskets from nearby Boots chemist (the security guard allowing it just for the occasion ). It was awesome being part of such a ... read more

Today we bought our van. Still looking a for a car though. The van is a nice, clean one that has most things we will need. Have attached some photos of St.Pauls Cathedral which we saw when we went into town after buying the van. Weather is really cold but mostly sunny. Tomorrow is the Royal Wedding and is a day off here. Signs and banners everywhere congratulating William and Kate. We will be watching it on TV. Big screen TVs will be set up at Trafalgar Square, Hyde Park and other venues throughout London.... read more

Well we finally arrived in the UK after our 24 hour flight. We started off tired since our flight left at midnight and things didn't get much better. Got a little bit of sleep on the Brisbane-Singapore leg but not from Singapore to London. We had a smooth flight with not much turbulence. Not too cloudy either which meant we got to see some of the different landscapes. Flew over Afghanistan which looked bleak and inhospitable. Flew north to parts of Russia and then over Germany, Belgium to London. Trevor's niece Nicky and her little boy Sam picked us up from airport. Drove through crazy traffic to their home in Leytonstowe, a north east suburb of London. Very close to where the Olympics will be held next year. Nathan was asleep before we reached home and ... read more

Y - M - C - A!! Yep, the brits were playing YMCA as part of the ceremony of the changing of the guard. Kinda funny considering the ceremony is supposed to be steeped in tradition, but I guess you have to change it up somehow.... So in case you haven't figured out, we started the day out today at Buckingham Palace to watch the changing of the guards. There were plenty of people crowded in trying to get a glimpse. I managed to snag a place right by the side gates. So I got a good video of the band and horses marching in. The rest of the gang were by the side, so they had a better glimpse of the ceremony. Some funny tidbits.... The Bobbies were trying to control the crowd. They moved ... read more

In honor of the queen's birthday today, there were plenty of celebrations throughout London. We happened to be at the Tower of London and was able to witness a 62 gun salute. The basic Royal Salute is 21 rounds, but at the Tower of London, you add an extra 20 because the Tower is a Royal Palace Fortress and another 21 for the City of London. It was neat. Quite loud, but neat to witness the ceremony. No Queen though, but the guns were ablazin! Because our Tower of London experience centered around the salute as well as the desire to climb the steps of St. Paul, the Tower of London was a quick walk by. We walked along the perimeter of the Fortress a little bit. Was hoping to get to see the crown jewels, ... read more

Cherrio ladies and gents... Happy Tuesday, almost Wednesday. Slept nicely yesterday. If you're ever in London, recommend staying at the Marriott Regent Park. It's not city center, but it's just a stones throw from the Swiss Cottage tube station - Jubilee line. You can pretty much get to city center within 15-20 minutes. Today was a nice leisurely day for us. We woke up early enough and had breakfast about the Swiss Cottage area at this nice little neighborhood joint called Pasticcio. It was really a italian cafe, but they also offered the full english breakfast. I only ordered half and I had to decide between white coffee and black coffee. I can only assume that the white coffee had milk in it and being quasi lactose... I decided to go with the black. It was ... read more

London will always be remembered as a proper good time with excellent company. As many of you know, I was the only American when I volunteered in Ghana last summer and the other volunteers I lived with were all from the United Kingdom. Five of them met us in London and it was fantastic to reunite with friends that I shared such a special experience with. Jake and I arrived in London on the Eurostar early Friday morning. (Funny story- we literally sprinted with our backpacks to catch the train…quite a sight to see…). The rest of the crew were not arriving until the evening hours so we dropped our bags off at the hostel and headed out to see the sites. First stop was Buckingham Palace which was not necessarily the prettiest site to see ... read more

Right OK so I'm going off to Ghana for 4 months as of tomorrow and feel the best way to keep you all updated with my travels (if you care) is with a blog! I am more or less completely packed with 2 suitcases laden to the gunnels. This wasn't the plan, but you never know what you may need when you are going to be away for quite such a long time, so I have all sorts of useless junk that I'm sure I will never use! I'm all jabbed up (BCG, Yellow Fever, Meningitis ACWY, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis A, Typhoid, Diptheria, Tetanus, Polio, Rabies) and also 2 doses in to my anti-malarial medication now - I very jammily managed to get the stuff with least side effects on the NHS! The joys of work ... read more

As warned in my post last week, I have written another London guide and it has just been published: London's historical homes This guide focuses on the former London homes of significant historical figures that have now been turned into small museums dedicated to the previous inhabitants (more interesting than it sounds, I promise!) Let me know what you think, feedback more than welcome. I'm hoping to complete my new blog website in the next couple of weeks, and will be booking my flights to South America later this week - I will post another entry on here when everything is confirmed. Very exciting! Cheers... read more
