Met my first person...in Winnipeg. As I sat at the bar waiting for my flight to board, I noticed the girl next to me order a shot of tequila. This was Mel, and as it turned out, she enjoys taking the edge off just as much as I do before getting on a plane. I opted for two glasses of red wine as my medicine (and possibly two hits of ativan). Anyway, Mel was from Toronto and had just spent two months waitressing on Lake of the Woods, to which I of course impressed my expertise about the locale. I may have left out the term 'Camp Counsellor.' But here's the kicker - she had decided to dump her job so she could spend the rest of the summer in Croatia with family. I myself will ... read more

Apologises to our dedicated followers about our lack of publishing.. no excuses but things should improve!! What possessed us to go to London for a long weekend I'm not sure, the hoards of tourists (unlike us), the mulitple line closures on the tube meaning it took twice as long to get any where and like a long weekend in any capital city.. chaos! Day 366 We headed down Friday morning checked into our Hostel at the Clink in Kings Cross, formally a prison into our room shared with two others (but would have accomodated only two prisoners hence was a little on the squishy side!). We dumped our gear and headed to the Body Worlds exhibition at the O2 arena on the other side on London on a bus (not a wise move!).Over an hour later ... read more

Day 198 Up for the early morning bus to London to catch up with our uni mates Sam Gaffey and Tim Morris. We checked into the backpackers at Hammersmith and set out with the boys to see some of the sights of London, with Tim self designated tour guide (With by far the most experience of London) took to negotiating the tube map. First stop was Piccadilly Circus from here we wandered down Regent Street for Tim to get a second, third and forth opinion on a jacket, and a prompt purchase thereafter. Next stop was at beautiful St Paul's Cathedral which we got as far as the foyer for a quick squiz, then we wandered down to the Thames river making our way past the very uninspiring London Bridge (yet to fall down) to the ... read more

Morning: Had a slow start this morning & woke up at about 8am. Yey my jetlag is over! Had a slow breakfast & left my bohemian couch only at around noontime. Afternoon: Decided to walk slowly to the Camden Market and stroll around the main Kentish Town street, lots of neighbourhood shops and supermarkets along this street, then of course we got lost...end up taking longer to reach this market called the Stables Market, lots of bohemian & gothic stuffs on sale and we had a great time just looking at the different things they are putting up for sale. Bought 3 pairs of earrings for £7 and also a nice cap for £12 there, then after a really delicious Oriental lunch that costs £3.80, we finally reached Camden Market...um we thot we were at Camden ... read more

Morning: It's daylight savings today and we are taking a 2.20pm coach back to London. Everything was brought forward an hour so the schedule became a little bit rushed somehow. After Mark's suggestions, we decided to attend the 11.15am mass service in Christ Church just to enter the grounds and take our chance w the dining hall. After a slow breakfast, we went to the cathedral and it was long and beautiful indeed. After the hour-long service, we walked around the grounds taking photos and tried to ener the dining hall, but the guards there were too strict and refuse us a glimpse. So we can only take the exterior wall of the long hall *sigh* too bad...We then were left w abt an hour to pack our stuffs so we kindof rushed around to get ... read more

So my journey has begun. I flew out of Calgary on Feb 20 at 1030 pm and arrived in London at 300pm on Feb 21. The flight was easy given that I had a whole row to myself and could sprawl out. After finding my way through the underground, I was able to get ahold of Michael (friend from Contiki) and he came to pick me up. I'm crashing at his place tonight and then getting up early to head to New Delhi, India. ... read more

Alot seems alike when travelling as a Westerner in Western countries. Transport systems, city planning, mainstream culture, housing, food (not to mention chain restaurants) and even some traits of people's social behavior can seem as familiar as home. All may seem very predictable - which is boring for some and comfortable for others. But I think it then becomes more important to keep an eye open to nuances. It struck me while sitting on the train, from Stansted to London City area, that the grass is much greener in England than in Sweden - nuance. Well, if you can even call the January mud in Sweden 'grass'. I was excited to (finally) visit and spend a weekend in one of the world most known cities, London. On the train you could find the same individualistic silence ... read more
