London is more than what you read in a travel guide, London is exciting, busy, wet, overcast and historically rich. The streets are overcrowded and if you attempt to catch a train in peak hour traffic...good luck! The London Tower is impressive and full of history. We spent hours wandering around the historic castle were the crown jewels are kept. On a guided tour from a ‘beefeater,’ I was intrigued to learn that the beefeaters are locked in the London Tower every night, I couldn’t think of anything worse than being locked inside the most haunted place in England. A place of execution, death, and imprisonment the London Tower is one place I would not want to be at night, it is defiantly an eerie place. ... read more

Birthdays should be celebrated, and celebrated well. Which is why I was not going to let a 14hour work day stand in my way. To backtrack ever so slightly I have been fortunate enough to find employment within Europe’s biggest premium spirits trader, so apart from the free gym and cheap cafe, I get fantastic perks whenever the company is launching or promoting one of their brands, which is often. With the goal to save as much as possible (to work as little as possible in the summer) I also work nights at a bar. A dingy establishment where locals stop to drink their life away. Filled with baby boomers and illegal immigrants (mostly Kiwi) the bar is quite the laugh. As a local bar filled with the same faces each week, I have managed to ... read more

Ugh... having a down point. I have limited friends, no job and not a whole lot of funds left. Part of me wants to take out a loan, travel for a few months and return to my fabulous life in Melbourne. Is this all because I am now out of my comfort zone? Am I homesick? Having a lack on employment is the major player here, an old work collegue gave me a worse than terrible reference, the owner of the company says he is looking into it, but I am not over confident. I can handle a bad reference, however the facts were all untrue, it was complete slander of my name within the professional community. What to do now? I feel lost, annoyed, lonley... this is not like me at all! I am usually ... read more

It has possibly been the craziest year of my life to date and i will always remember it as the best. First half of the year was all about the wedding planning, i won't lie, at times the stress level was immense but 2 months ago on possibly the hottest day of the year many of you were there to see us be married, and it was fantastic, i'm not sure i stopped smiling all day! We've just got back the official photos and video and we're so glad we managed to get them before we go. Video has already been loaded onto the ipod and everything! We loved having you all there and hope you enjoyed yourselves. :-) And now in 10 days we're off on our second adventure of the year. We're mostly packed, ... read more

Drinking cider in a flat in London courtesy of cousin Emma. The flat is in Clapham North situated above a bakery. It has been absolutely wonderful being so much closer to town compared to our first hostel. Much love and appreciation to cousin Emma. There has been a bucket load of activity since our last entry. To quickly inform you of our final moments in Banging Bangkok… We ventured to the night markets on Kaosam Rd for our first Changs. Enjoyed the sweet tunes of Bangkok blues whilst sitting in the bustling street. Steph got chatted up by a mid 40 year old musician. As we sat humouring the musician TBone was accosted by the Tibetan dressed sherpa lady selling trinkets such as the ribbeting frog carving and a 'magic' wallet. Sherpa lady felt the need ... read more

There are many joys about spending a few years in the Northern Hemisphere, and one of the best is the lead up to Christmas. Christmas in London has its own kind of magic, from the sparkling lights lining Oxford and Regent Streets, to the window displays at Harrods and the giant snow globe over the statue of Eros in Picadilly Circus. My festive season started early with our work 'Winter Party' staged at a posh hotel in Victoria during November. We were greeted at the door with champange and mojitos and were treated to an Indian feast, some carnival dancers and an open bar all night. They had an Indian DJ for the party so there were Bollywood moves being busted out on the dance floor. I put my previous Bollywood dance lessons to good use ... read more

I missed the shot I wanted. Australians are really odd people, mate. You see, I unknowingly attempted to order some food at an Aussie bar (They have quite a few throughout Europe, by the way), and when no one came to help me for several minutes, I got up and went to the bathroom. Now, as stimulating as that seems, it’s not half as stimulating as INFLATABLE SHEEP DOLLS, which were all SOLD OUT in the men’s room. I can’t imagine what’s funnier - the fact that they sell inflatable sheep at Aussie bars - or the fact that they’re all sold out of them. Anyway, I was trying to take a picture of this, when I heard another fellow walking into the bathroom, and I certainly didn’t want to be caught inspecting the inflatable sheep ... read more

Well we have been on the road for over a year! A year since we made the change from retirees/consultants/farmers to travellers. Comes as a bit of a shock. After all we are still getting organised and there is still much more to see and do than we had intended to have left after a year. But it is timely that we review our progress. We have visited 21 countries in the last year, some more than once and that doesn't include 2 trips back to Australia. We have flown in excess of 56,000 kilometres, driven ourselves over 40,000 kilometres, been driven around southern India, Vietnam, some of Malaysia, around Turkey and a bit of England in cars and buses and travelled over 6,000 km on trains. All of this has cost us an average of ... read more

Clear blue skies to start the day with so we headed off to the London Eye. From there we walked over the Thames to Trafalgar Square and a short visit to the National Gallery. From there it was off to Covent Garden for lunch and a bit of shopping. The rest of the day was spent enjoying the sight and sounds of the carnival. In the evening we enjoyed dinner in La Bella Italia restaurant - the students' first experience of the Godfather dessert. ... read more

Anne writes: Used the London Bus System this morning, I prefer it. I feel like I am in control , I can sit with the map on my knee and follow where the driver of the big bendy bus is taking us, Secondly it is not hot and smelly like the underground, there were loads of seats and it left from our front gate and took us all the way to our destination the Nationla Gallery. National Gallery, number 2 on Trip Advisor after the Big Fat Tires and I agree. Billions of dollars of amazing works of art and all the world can just troop in and gawp. Fantastic. I could have stayed all day. I particularly enjoyed freeloading on the guided tours for school kids. Some of the people explaining the art to the ... read more
