In mid-February I lost my aunt very suddenly. I found out on Facebook, which is a god-awful way to get news like that. After I confirmed it with my parents, I looked around and realized that the house was empty and none of my friends were online. In the six months that I spent overseas, this was the only time that I felt lonely and heartsick. I texted Romain and asked if I could come over, and he said of course. I remember standing in front of his door a few minutes later, and when he opened it I started crying. "My aunt died," I said, wiping at the tears. "I just didn't want to be alone." He opened his arms and hugged me for a long time. I don't know if I ever really told ... read more

One of the coolest parts of Hull is the Fish Trail. Hull is a coastal city, and there is a path leading all around Old Town that is marked by different depictions of fish. It begins in the city centre and takes you to all the best sights, including Ye Olde White Harte, the oldest pub in East Yorkshire. Tia, Aurelie, Romain, and I were determined to conquer it, but the weather had other ideas. Giving Romain the map was our first mistake. Feel free to insert your own joke about men asking for directions. We barely made it out of the city centre before we convinced him to give the now-sodden map to Aurelie. From the moment we left the visitor center it was drizzling, and every time one of us took the map out ... read more

About two months before I was supposed to get on a plane to England, my dad caught pneumonia and was hospitalized. When I left my hometown to come back to work up north, he was in a medically induced coma. He woke up a few days later, but by that point the muscles in his legs had deteriorated to such a point that he couldn't walk. We didn't know it then, but he would stay in the hospital for nearly two years and never fully recover. I say this so everyone reading will understand two things: how amazing my family really is, and how damnably hard it was to say goodbye in January. About a month after his illness, I called my mother and asked if she wanted me to stay. She very calmly informed me ... read more

Hull. Kingston Upon Hull. King Edward I’s town upon the River Hull. I searched King Edward and Hull on the internet and after fifty references to things American (all searches on the internet seem to give me fifty things American before they list what I'm really after) I found this. "Edward the First, conquered Wales, razed Berwick on Tweed to the ground and tried to give Scotland the same treatment..." Over the years I've realised that King Edward's Hull descendant folk rarely mention this. If ever. One of my nans was born in Berwick on Tweed and she lived and finally died in Hull. She never grumbled about Edward. Not once. We used to vist her a lot. Cooked a cracking dumpling. Margaret and her man, Alex. A fine pair. Neither of them mentioned the Edward ... read more

Land back in England 23rd July to 8th August 2012. Monday 23rd July 2012. Ferry arrives at 8am at Hull terminal. We leave the ferry expecting to be stopped by DVLA or police as motorhome is not registered, nor has been tested for 2 years. Nope – off we go (all that stress for nothing). We find the Hull Van Centre and have the MOT done – it needs parking lights fixed. Off to find the campsite. It is in the Estate of Burton Constable. Have to have all caravans facing the lake that we can’t swim in. There is no pool and no wi-fi and crappy reception for the mobile phone. Supposed to be 5 star – think it is self rated!! But it is a very p... read more

After 20 minutes of packing the car, taking everything out again and then repacking it in order to fit all our suitcases, cooking equipment, and Christmas pressies in, we finally manage to set off for about 10.30am. We have a long drive ahead of us today, all the way from Glasgow down to Hull, in the snow (at least it’s good practice for wee Charlie). The sat nav says it should take about 4 – 4 ½ hours, but as it’s been snowing heavily and we don’t know what the roads will be like down in England, we give ourselves an extra 2 hours just in case. I’ve bagsied the UK part of the driving, as the last time I drove on the right hand side of the road it ended with a tyre being skelped ... read more

Hi everyone here's the last blog. Sunday 4th After the rather unfortunate incident with the irate Swiss bloke we drove off and crossed over the Rhine at Schaffhausen Switzerland, after just a few miles we were soon into Germany and heading into the black forest. We were familiar with this area having been here 3 years ago so we decided to revisit a camp site we stayed on back in 2008 in the city of Freiburg. Being back on familiar territory and meeting up with familiar travellers in Glen and Linda who after having had 4 months back in the UK were out for a summer trip, we made plans to stay in Freiburg for 4 days. Over those days we walked around the lovely city with it's medieval old town and it's streamlets that run ... read more

Hiya all. Sorry we haven't been updating but the internet was down at the hotel and we couldn't log on. Plus it's been family visits and stuff, which is great for me but probably boring for everyone else! lol So.... what have we been up to. We had a lovely relaxing time in London. On Friday we headed to Watford to pick up the car. We have a Vauxhall Meriva. It's not a bad car though Mark tells me it's got no pickup.. lol.. I wouldn't know because I don't drive over here.. way too much traffic for me. Mark handles it fairly well, something to do with driving in Victoria I'd say. Well after picking up the car we headed off on the M25 making our way to see Leslie and Jo. We had a ... read more
