We went for a morning walk with our friends around their part of Taunton and then we set-off for North Devon where we had arranged to meet my wife's cousin and her husband, who we had also not seen in a long time. On the way there, we stopped off at Saunton Beach for anther walk and some fresh sea air. This is a fantastic beach - wide, long, smooth sand and not that many people, or at least its size swallowed the people who were there. It's extremely flat so the tide goes out a long way and, I suspect will come back in again extremely quickly. We could tell it was popular with surfers whilst we were still in the carpark - lots of long-hair, wetsuits and VW camper vans. We could see why ... read more

After a good breakfast, we set out to look around places near the Bristol Channel. We began at the beach of Woolacombe. This is a very popular surf beach, and in fact the only place we have seen surf lifesavers on duty. The tide seemed to be out and there was a large sandy beach. Lots of people were arriving in wetsuits with their surfboards. Many of them were also wearing gloves and boots! The were lots of surfers in the water, many catching waves. We watched for a while and then moved on. Our next stop was going to be Arlington Court, a National Trust place. The Chichester family had lived there for a long period of time- the last of them dying in 1949,when the National Trust took over the property. It is a ... read more

Today we have moved on to Ilfracombe- an English seaside resort town. The B&B where we are staying contacted us earlier in the week and asked if we could check in early as they had appointments during the afternoon. As we only had a short drive, we were happy to agree. The morning was quite wet, so we didn’t stop on our way. The forecast suggested that it would clear about 10am, but by the time we arrived in Ilfracombe (round 12) the sun was yet to make an appearance, although the rain was almost stopped. We found Marine Court, our home for the next two nights, and met Karen and Russ our hosts. They suggested a walk down to the harbour and around the lower town. We wanted to check our where our restaurant for ... read more

Well that’s Ilfracombe almost done and dusted. We arrived here almost a week ago after spending most of the day in Exeter followed by a slow, wet drive across the moors to Ilfracombe. When we arrived our AirBnB hosts had the fire on! Exeter was pleasant but uneventful. It wouldn’t be an overseas trip unless Terry was trying to find something – a tiny screw driver in rural France, shoe polish in rural China and a replacement camera battery charger in Devon. We spent a bit of time trying to do that but eventually found success and saw parts of Exeter that we hadn’t counted on. Exeter is a relatively small city and was easy to negotiate by foot once in the centre of town – we left our car at the Park ‘n’ Ride. Lunch ... read more

Well this was probably the worst time of my life so far, unfortunately my marriage was no longer working and I had feelings for someone else. Not much about travel in here but after 16 years of marriage it had to end and I called my mum, not what I expected to do or happen after so many years, the tears rolled down my face as I said goodbye to the kids and got into my mothers car to return to Bristol.... read more

Life in Devon. Moving to Ilfracombe in the heart of North Devon was a great experience for the family and myself. Fresh start new schools, new opportunities and the sea air. I managed to land a job on the high street within a couple of days and we settled into the seaside lifestyle. It is surprising where the time goes; I learned to scuba dive with the local dive club, my work life changed dramatically by the seaside everything is seasonal. I began working in a local zoo, first as a technical engineer and then onto full time maintenance, five years later I was still there.... read more

Geo: 51.2084, -4.11295After a few hours of Rach's driving and my navigating, we made it to our destination for the night. We drove around and found the hostel. This town was very quiet, we were confident that we would find beds at the hostel. We were right. Had an en-suite dorm to ourselves. Once accommodation was sorted out, we went for a walk around town. It was a bit windy, but still a very cute little seaside town. This town is north Devon's largest seaside resort. It is summer and it was very quiet!! We went for a drive to nearby Woolacombe and went for a walk along the beach and saw some colourful beach boxes. Then we drove along the very narrow roads back to Ilfracombe. It is so much easier to travel with a ... read more
