I was always more of a The Sweet kid. Blockbuster. The first single I ever bought. Yes - one of those round black pieces of vinyl, that hissed and crackled at 45 revs per minute. I obviously still have it to hand. The Other Half sighs. If only, it was the only one! The other teen band of the charts - Slade - originally a bunch of Wolverhampton skinheads, was perhaps too heavy for my taste in the day. It all came flooding back at Leicester Road. The other band in the equation - Slade - was booming out. It wasn't from the tannoy, but from 2 guys of my generation. An improvised version of Come On Feel The Noise in support of the team in Red & Blue. What Noddy Holder would make of it ... read more

Its 11 pm on Friday night, 3 days before I start to do my pilgrimage and the count down has started. What I haven't got I'll have to go without. You've all been incredibly supportive and the amount of advice, tips and gifts/loans has been incredible. Thank you. I can't wait to get started now and attempt to keep you all posted via this blog. Hence being up at this time of night on a Friday trying to fathom out WordPress and gagging for a bottle of wine and some chocolate!... read more

We didn’t have a big distance to cover today so we could afford a leisurely breakfast and then as we haven’t had time to visit the birds in the Raptor Centre we have been staying at we are going to take advantage of free entry because we have stayed at the accommodation. With the car packed and the centre opened at 10am we took a walk around amongst the birds which included some that are housed outdoors on tethers attached to stakes in the ground. The first animals you see though are not birds but meerkats, three of them. It could be very hard not to go any further as watching these playful animals can be a time consuming affair. Next to the meerkats is a room of display cabinets containing snakes and reptiles including an ... read more

There is a chinese proverb that says that you should be not afraid of growing slowly , you should be more afraid of standing still. So today was a day of not standing still. Where shall we go? We needed somewhere fairly close. We needed somewhere we had not been to before. That is getting harder and harder as we exhaust places that are within travelling distance of home. So it was that we took the book out and looked at possible places to go and visit. Haddon Hall. Just down the road from us. About 8 miles away. Good idea- but we have been there before. OK but that was over 12 years ago. Surely we can go again. So what swung it then? A two for one offer from the Caravan Club where we ... read more

When I last left this blog we had just left Powis Castle in Wales and were on our way to our next stop in the Peak District. We had a pleasant drive, by passing the cities/towns of Shrewsbury, Market Drayton and Loggerheads; we were thinking that we were making good time, until we reached Stoke-on-Trent at what passes for rush hour. No rushing to be had there. We crawled our way through the approaches to the M6 and along a main road before finally hitting the open road. After a few miles we were getting close to our destination and the roads were becoming narrower. The pièce de résistance though would have to be the last few miles of our trip. We drove along Bottom Lane (pleasant) and then were guided down Parsons Lane and through ... read more

Well what a momentous week! The best result you could wish for. An unexpected one at that. Life will never be the same again. A country rose up loud and proud . The Dragon roared . Victorious that's what we are. No not the referendum and Brexit . Wales coming top of the group in Euro 2016 . Finishing above England with a win over Slovakia, a thrashing of Russia and a woeful sad last minute robbing by England. To top it all we are now through to the last 8. Unexpected - yes - with a population so small we don't have the players . The players we have play in lower divisions of the English League with the exception of a handful of Premiership players and one rather special one - Gareth Bale. Despite ... read more

We started the day in Ashford in the Water to take a tour of the village well dressings...a little bizarre, quite frankly, for a "celebration of water and the life it brings". Well dressings are pictures made with "growing things" like wood, bark, flower petals, berries, leaves, seeds, etc. on a bed of soft clay. The board is then mounted at one of the village springs or wells. This tradition is carried on in various towns and weeks throughout the summer in the Peaks District. 2016 has been designated as the year of the garden in England. The village church had a flower show to coinside with their well dressing tour. Off to Bakewell for some breakfast. And then on to Monsal Head, to begin the day hike on the Monsal Trail. The trail is a traffic free route for walkers, cyclists, horse riders and wheelchair users through some of the Peak District's most spectacular limestone dales. The trail runs along the former Midland Railway line, and River Wye, for 8.5 miles between Blackwell Mill, in Chee Dale and Coombs Road, at Bakewell. Most of the route was opened to the public in 1981 but four former railway tunnels had to remain closed due to safety reasons, with public footpaths taking people around them. These four railway tunnels - Headstone Tunnel, Cressbrook Tunnel, Litton Tunnel, Chee Tor Tunnel – opened for trail users a few years back. Our plan is to walk from Monsal Head to Wyedale, ... read more

Drove to Lichfield and toured the three towered Cathedral and wondered through the town. I found a delightful elderly lady running a coffee shop. I gave my typical..."on my gap year, forty years delayed" spiel, but she seemed genuinely interested, as I was the only person in her shop and she wanted to talk. When I ggot to the Seven Sidters part of our trip, she lit up. She was one of seven sisters and enjoyed having been there. Now on to the Peaks District, starting in Ashbourne. Where we walked the town, St. Oswald, and lunch at Jack Rabbit’s Ashbourne. Got to Ilam Hall YHA and got directions for the Dovedale Hike loop, which starts and ends at Ilam Park. Dovedale hiking trail starts along the River Dove, where you have to cross the river ... read more

Another year has come and gone and this 60 something has had another burpday as Sion would say if he were in conversation with this best friend Woolly Mammoth. The head still thinks its about 16 or thereabouts but the body is beginning to hate this cold weather and what seems like never ending winter . Oh Greece ..................oh sun wherefore art thou? Today of all days I feel the need to get Suzy on the road and head off into the blue yonder where the sun shines every day. Where every day has a new view to behold. Where each morning I wake up to sunshine, to croissants, espresso coffees, where I am in food heaven all the time. Gnocci, cream cakes, sangria , churro and chocolate . Suzy is in the process of being ... read more
