So where do you do your best thinking? In bed ? On a walk? When you cook breakfast? I lay in bed thinking. The sun was coming up and I was thinking - will it be a lovely day today? Will it rain again? It was hard to tell as it was early and morning had not quite broken . Would I get out for my walk today? Or would the rain defeat me as it has done on a few days? So what day of the week was it? It was Monday morning and I had the day and the week ahead of me.
It is partial lockdown now . Boris has spoken and we are heading for a bit more freedom. We can go out more. We can travel more. We can get into shops without queuing but from the middle of the month we will need to wear masks in shops. The law will change and we can be fined £100 for non compliance. We can go to the chiropodist , we can visit the hairdresser and men can go to the barbers. Nail bars will open shortly. Any beauticians who work on the face cannot work
though for the time being. No getting close yet. Face masks worn on public transport . A few national properties are trialling opening . Just seven houses who are going to see how it works .
So things are changing . My walk took me around the estate . The one thing I noticed was the freshness of the air. It is cooler now than it has been and it feels less like July and more like November . Even the conkers on the trees are starting to form . Signs of Autumn are all around. The pine cones are lying under the trees . There are holly berries on the trees and the Hawthorn berries are just starting to turn a hint of red and orange. Everywhere I looked felt Autumnal .
My walk took me to Stubbing Pond . The water surface was covered with pink Plantain. No sign of the coot and her chicks . A couple of fishermen were fishing on the banks . I crossed the pond and stood at the gateway overlooking the field . Who was watching me? A flock of sheep watched me. They moved a few hundred yards as
I approached them. In the distance I saw the farmer He was pulling up and rolling in the electric fence . The dog watched . We chatted . "He is good dog " he said . " He loves chasing the electric fence " He , the dog wandered round rounding up the sheep or so it appeared . " He is not much good with sheep " my new friend the farmer told me . I was amazed at this story as he seemed to be making a good job of it in my eyes. " He likes cows " I smiled as he told me he called the dog a cow dog as he made a better job rounding up cows than sheep. We stood a while talking about sheepdogs, the weather and walking .
I left him and headed home . It was coffee time and a time to retell the story of the cow dog . And a rather clever cow dog at that . The afternoon was spent thinking again - thinking of holidays . Yes we are going in September . Covid 19 won't stop us. Tunnel booked . We printed a couple
of maps of France - the printer played up. France in pink and grey looked odd . The French books came out . A search was made of the pretty villages of France , medieval villages in France and bastides . A plan started to evolve . Head for Reims. Visit Guedelon and see how the castle had evolved over time. Head for Bordeaux and the south . A plan is evolving . Slowly but at least it is a plan .
