As I walked my mind was all over the place . Bored with the walking . Frustrated to be stuck at home . Fed up with the walks . I need something challenging. Something different . Something interesting and something entertaining. Week 14 - still stuck at home with nowhere to go and a cracked windscreen on Gabby . It will be fixed today or so we hope.
I wondered if walks were like books . A new book that you have never read . You can never guess from the cover or from the short synopsis on the back page whether or not you will enjoy the book. You don't know if you will even finish it. When you get a few pages in you usually have made your mind up about it . It has either grabbed your attention and you cannot put it down or you do put it down and never finish it .
When I started walking my village was like that book. I knew it was there . I had driven around it for the best part of 6 and a half years . I knew there was more to it than met
my eye. But I chose to ignore it . A bit like picking the book up, liking the picture on the front but putting it down without reading what it was all about .
Covid 19 made me pick up Wingerworth and its paths and woods and look at it properly . I had all the time in the world to walk so I was going to discover every nook and cranny. Walking this morning up Hockley and then down to the A61 I realised just how much walking I had done and how much more I knew about my locality . I have to thank Covid 19 for that I suppose .
Like a book I had two choices - my walks would either fascinate me and I keep going back or I would find an area, hate it and never return . If I walked the same ground I could sometimes see different things . Things I had missed the first time round . Bit like that book really. Read it once - get a hand on the story . Read it twice and other characters become interesting . If it is a good book then
the third reading opened up other ideas . Some books you can do that with. You can read them once , put them down and then realise you need to read them again . And if they are the sort of book that grips you then you re-read them over and over again never tiring of them .
Walks are like that . Some I can walk and see with fresh eyes something new . I leave it a week and then return . New people to chat with . New sights and sounds . Different light on a different day. A scene seen in the dull morning light looks different ot one seen in the rain or the bright sunlight .Sometimes it is the new flowers that blossom that catch my eye .
Other walks bore, Like the boring book that did not capture my imagination I cannot wait to get home and sit down with my coffee and something chocolate . You know that sometimes you never will enjoy that boring book you have picked up.
Most days though my walks like a good book deliver and today was one of those days when the sun shone . The folks I passed talked to me. And of course Gabby will get her new windscreen .
