Monster of a day! Up nice and early at 6.30, breakfast for 7.30 and off at 8.00. Ready for the day. Up, up and away for today. Straight into the first beast of a climb to Lining Crag. Nice gentle start through to Stonethwaite before we start to go up. we look up at a HUGE monstrosity called Eagle Crag - looks enormous, but a bit concerned since the guidebook says that we’ll be looking down on that soon(ish). So up we go - already starting to get steep and rising above lovely waterfalls. Still steeper until a beast of a climb to the top - more like scrambling up these rocks. Finished! Except we weren’t - over the top just to see another peak even higher that we needed to go up to Greenup Edge ... read more

Waking to a clearer and drier day we were even more grateful for having had our rest day yesterday. After a good breakie and getting our left over cheese (from last nights cheese board) and some free bread we headed back out into the trail. At 14km and 600m it was a shortish one but involved 2hours of ascent straight out of Grasmere. Despite some huffing and puffing along the way, the climb actually went by pretty quickly, following country roads and gravel track up into the valley, (catching a sheep farmer and his dog actually hearding sheep with lots of different whistles and noises), then bendy rocky tracks, often with water running down them, the further up we went. This meant some stunning waterfalls though, and hidden tarns (‘lakes’) between the peaks as we made ... read more

The cold I had started to get came on with a vengence in the army part of the previous evening meaning I had a decision to make about walking.....on the guides advice I decided I would take a day in the van instead and was promptly joined by Pete’s mother and Jess all in the van for a rest!! We drove to Ambleside for a little shopping and then through to Patterdale to await the others who had trekked into location. Pete will write the rest of the blog from here..... I was the last Garrett standing on the trip after a particularly hard previous day for the girls. James our guide for the day gave us a quick briefing on the go as our hotel had delayed the collection of the packed lunches much to ... read more

We are still in the Lake District and we continue to see new and spectacularly beautiful scenery. Today we had the true Lakelands experience with weather ranging from "peaks of sunshine " to gale force winds and rain that briefly felt like it was mixed with sleet. Our morning started with navigation questions...first to find our way back to the trail! We passed a couple coming up the road, who were able to give us very clear directions since he lived close by, right off the trail. We were briefly detained by a traffic jam. (See picture below). We then began our ascent to Grisedale Tarn (lake). it was cloudy, cool and misty and it was difficult to decide what to wear. The ascent was steep and long and no one wanted to wear rain gear ... read more
