Underway from GlaraMara 24 August 2019, Saturday.
Day 5 on Coast 2 Coast, day 8 of travel.
The guidebooks and the Google maps indicated that the day would be about a nine-hour walk. Janet was joining us for her first long-distance walk. From Seatoller this started with a gentle walk up the stream through Rosthwaite. Then we started our climb over the mountain. Along the river there were many tent campers and other campers who were out enjoying a walk along the trail beside the river. The further we walked the steeper the climb became. Near the rock outcrop called Lining Crag, it became an upward scramble over the rocks. We were moving at a significantly slower Pace than we had anticipated.
At this point I took Janet's backpack in hopes of giving her more stability and easier climbing. We next had to negotiate several bogs to get to the peak of the mountain. The sunny day gave us spectacular views back to the West over the lakes and toward the ocean. We were continuing, but very slowly. I asked several hikers going west how much farther they thought it was to Grasmere. We were still four to five hours away. by
this time it was toward 4 in the afternoon and I was beginning to worry about having enough daylight to finish.
The climb down the mountain was not less steep than the climb up the mountain had been. At one point I I had telephone communications so I checked Google maps. We were more than four and a half miles away from our destination. and we were proceeding at approximately 1 km every 50 minutes.
At 7:30 p.m. we had almost completed our descent of the mountain but Google maps indicated we were still 2.1 miles away from our hotel. We continued walking and when we reach the hotel just a few minutes before 9 p.m. the proprietor told us he had called C2C Packhorse to determine if the rescue squad should come looking for us. Fortunately we arrived just as he was starting to make a call. The Tweedies bar and restaurant was nice enough to continue to service a meal after their 9:30 kitchen closing.
This hotel now known as Tweeties Bar and Lodge is the same Dale Lodge hotel which we stayed at on our previous Coast to Coast trip. So we were delighted

Narrow path beside the road leaving Seatoller. to be in Grasmere and have the next day of rest.
Our statistics for the day; more than 11 hours of walking, almost 1780 feet of elevation gain and we had covered 11.84 miles. these are the best estimates as my Garmin watch ran out of charge about three miles from the hotel.
