After a windy & wet night, we woke to a much calmer morning, with the tent surprisingly dry. Making use of the pleasant weather, we had some coffee and porridge in bed, and then got ourselves ready, packed up and headed on out at about 9am; noting our German friend, who planned to walk double what we were doing, had already left bright and early. Todays planned walk for us was shorter then yesterday but almost the same elevation, and we definitely felt it! Similar to yesterday, we followed the river into a valley, initially climbing steadily, and then more steeply, before finding ourselves watching a couple of others zig zag up what looked like a rock face up ahead. Thankfully, as we got closer we saw there was a scrambled trail there, mixing steps with ... read more

On 12th April myself and a friend set off to walk the Lake District section of the Coast to Coast Path. For six days we set off each morning, navigated our way along the path and as evening approached pitched our tents for the night. We covered about 70 miles and were very lucky with the weather, dull at times but only one short period of rain. After a relatively gentle first day, the second day started with a walk along Ennerdale Water. Shortly after scrambling down Robin Hood's Chair, the difficulty of which should be highlighed more, Brendan noticed a large bird over the lake ahead of us. Once I saw it in my binoculars I recognised it immediately as an osprey. Major excitment. We got great views of it for most of our walk ... read more

25 August 2019, Sunday Day 9 of travel and a day around Grasmere and the lakes district. Today is a much-welcomed rest day. Our breakfast did not start here at the Tweeties Bar and Lodge until 8:15. We had been so tired and it was so late when we arrived last night that we simply ate, took a shower and went to bed. This morning I did my washing for the week in the shower hoping it would dry. It is peak holiday season here in the lake district. The game festival has brought 1000s more to Grasmere. Roads jammed and every inch of space filled with parked cars. It is like a big State Fair. After breakfast Chuck and Janet went to the church at St Oswald's Church in Grasmere. This churchyard is where William ... read more

23 August 2019, Friday Day 7 of my travel and day 4 of our walking the coast 2 coast trail. Many more people we met today walking the windy, Misty but very wet, North shore of Ennerdale Water. A total of 15 including one biker were in the Black Sail YHA hut have lunch and coffee or tea. It is a nice cosy place with two flush toilets. Because of the heavy rains we were told to take the north side of the lake route otherwise we would be waiting through mud and water if we went on the south side. The forecast had been for no rain but we left in a heavy mist. The gradual walk along roads and trails to black sail hut rose the elevation about 450 feet. After black sail hut ... read more

24 August 2019, Saturday. Day 5 on Coast 2 Coast, day 8 of travel. The guidebooks and the Google maps indicated that the day would be about a nine-hour walk. Janet was joining us for her first long-distance walk. From Seatoller this started with a gentle walk up the stream through Rosthwaite. Then we started our climb over the mountain. Along the river there were many tent campers and other campers who were out enjoying a walk along the trail beside the river. The further we walked the steeper the climb became. Near the rock outcrop called Lining Crag, it became an upward scramble over the rocks. We were moving at a significantly slower Pace than we had anticipated. At this point I took Janet's backpack in hopes of giving her more stability and easier climbing. ... read more

Rising from our accommodation this morning I was pleased to see some good quality fruit was on offer for breakfast, we had been staying in a rather basic but very pleasant B+B where apparently the sighting of red squirrels was a frequent occurance. The weather was horrendous so I was not surprised by their no show, I wanted to stay in bed myself having come down with a cold during the night. It was touch and go whether I would take a day in the van or actually do the days walk, my feet were battered, I was tired, my joints all aches I had blisters and now a cold too; in short I was struggling to function, couple that with one of the hardest days walking we were due and I had a decision to ... read more

A full day of sunshine with more incredible scenery, a huge variety of hiking experiences ending with a wonderful evening in a pub in Grasmere. Grasmere is one of the better known places where we will be staying since it is where Wordsworth wrote much of his poetry and where he us buried. Although the actual hike today was supposed to be only 9 miles we added some extra mileage at the beginning if the day when we followed "Melbourne Jeff" when he turned onto a wooded trail. A few of us felt that we should be continuing straight, but since "Melbourne Jeff" was doing the Coast to Coast for the 3rd time AND he was using a GPS, we all decided he must be right. After about 1/2 mile of climbing straight up a rocky ... read more

Yestreday we walked down Derwentwater where Swallows and Amazons was based and we spent most of the time looking for Wild Cat island. It was a very sunny day and I paddled in the River Derwent. We stayed in Honister youth hostel. Today the weather was the oppostite to yesterday - very windy, rainy, slightly foggy and very boggy. I fell over 8 times!!! we are now staying in Grasmere youth hostel and we think we wont go up helvellyn and striding edge tomorrow because it is too windy (60mph!). Instead we will go up to Grisedale Tarn and then down to patterdale to meet Mum. I hope we can go up Helvellyn later in the week.... read more

We had a fantastic time during our stay in the Lake District. To enable us as much flexibilty as possible we hired a camper van to travel arround in. There are many wild camping area's in the Lakes some more private than others. We were fortunate to have fantastic weather throughout our stay which provided us with some great opportunities to do a few hikes. The towns are packed with tourists regardless of where you go. We visited Ulswater, Kendle, Windermere, Keswick, Ambleside, Coniston, Grassmere and Glenriding. All offer the most superb scenery. ... read more
