Nicola and I endured major train delays when travelling back from Edinburgh after New Years. It sucked at that time but we were chuffed when virgin trains as an apology emailed us free tickets. They were great because they were return tickets to anywhere in the UK and were first class. The only condition was that you couldn't travel at easter so we decided to head up to Barrow the following week. Nic's brother Ryan was about to head off on his overseas trip to Thailand, Aussie and NZ so was our last chance to say sayonara. It was also the last time I'd be in Barrow before I left for Canada so Wilco helped me gather up the troops at the cricket club for a shindig. It was a good turn out and I caught ... read more

Not many people know that ‘Christmas is a time for giving’ is the shortened version of ‘Christmas is a time for giving, stuffing (your face with food), drinking (excessive amounts of alcohol), watching (‘The Goonies’ on video), and (under no circumstances whatsoever) exercising.’ Thankfully I am wise to this. I was also thankful to get an invite to spend Christmas with Nicola’s family, I didn’t fancy pulling crackers by myself. A few days before Christmas, Nic and I trained up to Barrow. On the day we arrived back we both met up with friends at the Strawberry pub, it turned out to be quite eventful as a lad who used to play in our cricket team accused my friend Weege of money laundering from the club, told us to stop bullying one of our team-mates called ... read more

Hi Guys. Having repaired my gear cable I set off from Chester along the Wirral Peninsula towards Liverpool. Again I was amazed at how beautiful some of the locations are in and around the city. In particular on the Wirral one becomes instantly aware why so many footballers live there. The best thing about crossing the Mersey is that the Ferry plays "Ferry across the Mersey" when you disembark. Superb. A brief stop in Blackpool I just simply had to ride the "Big One". It is the biggest and fastest roller coaster in Europe and it certainly deserves that reputation. Wicked. Blackpool whilst a typical British Seaside resort has a certain charm to it with trams travellling up and down the High Street and Blackpool Tower of course. The illuminations no doubt have an impact on ... read more

This one won't take that long, I hope. What can I say about Amsterdam? Well, I guess the easiest thing to say about Amsterdam is that it is a town in a league of its own. You step off the train and it's like you've stepped back in time about 30 years. Sure it's a modern city but in an old fashioned kinda way. It's a very liberal and free-spirited town, full of liberal and free-spirited people. I suppose that's the nice way of saying it's full of "hippie-like" people who for the most part are so stoned out of their minds to have any care in the world. Whether you like it or not, any visitor to Amsterdam will be surrounded by these people who take full advantage of the fact that soft drugs are ... read more

(To see the new website for Stylecrete go to www.stylecretecumbria.com) As my Dad will vouch I barely know which end of a shovel to hold. Well that was until I started working for a concreting company. Now I know which end to hold, how to saw wood, wheel wheelbarrows, float concrete, pull my pants down so you can see the top of my crack and various other trade secrets. Anyway I thought I’d give you some background on the company and what we do. Firstly there are four of us: - Jock who started the company 17 odd years ago and is supposed to be retired now that he is 66 but probably works harder than any of us. - Andy who is Jock’s son and has now taken over the company. He has said that ... read more

England played Brazil in a friendly on Friday night. Me and Nic went to the local and grabbed a few ciders and played drinking games during it, adding new rules in for each 5 minutes played. We were drinking for almost everything by the end of the game. I think it was a 1-1 draw but don’t quote me on that. Saturday I had no cricket so we detoxed by busing into the lakes and climbing up Coniston Old Man. It is quite a distance and took us most of the day to walk up and back down again. We had a competition in the tarn half way up to see who could stand in it for the longest. It was absolutely freezing and Nicola reckons her feet were about to fall off. So I won, ... read more

A group of the lads from cricket decided that seeing as we couldn’t go to the races on the weekend due to having to play twice that we would go on the Wednesday. We met early at a pub in town and sunk our first of the day before catching the train. We arrived into the races resplendent in our red barrow tracksuits with plenty of time before the first race. To kill some time Heff tried to kill Walker in a boxing match (see video above). We also watched a young brother and sister fighting. It was hilarious, both kids looked like they didn’t want to do it, while their mum cheered them on. Eventually the boy decided to land a few blows. The girl got off crying. It doesn’t sound that funny, but if ... read more

My second set of visitors for the week arrived on Friday night. Lisa and Andre who I flatted with in London, and Lisa’s sister Jenny. Unfortunately Jenny got sick overnight and trained back the next morning. The funny thing was that they had failed to mention that Jenny was coming at all! Everyone blames Andre. Even Andre. Saturday I had cricket so Nicola took them to the Cartmel horse races. A whole group of Nic’s friends were there too so they had a good day out. Andre managed to win on nearly every race and came away about 100 pounds up. I wish I had have joined them, our cricket was abysmal. We got about 130, I was given out lbw for 3 when I hit the cover off it. Then they scored our total ... read more

My brother Todd trained up from Wigan for a few days, I was working Monday so Nicola met him at the station and gave him a mini tour of Barrow. The maxi tour would take about 5 minutes longer. In the evening Todd and I decided we would try some foods we hadn’t had before - Black pudding and a drink called Irn-Bru. They were both heinous. Especially because I ate a massive chuck of the black pudding and then realized that on the back of the pack was a warning “This product must be eaten cooked”. YUCK. Tuesday I took Todd along to practice to meet some of my team mates. Everyone tries extra hard against the pros, but Todd had most of them worked out with his leg spinners. Not me of course, ... read more

I have managed to get myself a job for a mate Andy Baxter who I played cricket with in Menorca last year. He owns a concreting firm called Stylecrete. So you guessed it I have been doing manual labour. It’s good for the guns (biceps to the lay person) and for the tan if it’s sunny. Lately though it has been pretty miserable weather. I have only had a couple of shockers so far, both with the wheel barrow and both with me face planting. The manual labour must have helped my upper body strength because I managed to hit a few boundaries on Saturday. I ended up with 32 not out. Sadly though we didn’t get enough runs in total and ended up on the losing side. Frank (Nicola’s Dad) has a house that he ... read more
