Day 2 and the first day of proper cycling. Cooked breakfast in the YHA and I think I was going in the wrong direction by 8.45am and then also at 9.15am - soon the roads were ok though and I was cycling on a lonely road from St Just to Penzance. It was dark and cloudy. I saw some lamas in a field and got to Penzance about 10.15am - sat by the parade and looked out at sea and through the mist to St Michaels Mount - and generally felt very good about everything. Also rode past the park where the Cornish Prates play. Shouting 'you beauties' at the sleek brown lamas Who like me in my orange, orange top, are out of place Cornish hills staring out at sea Ignoring me. I try to ... read more

I'm just back from a lovely week in Cornwall with my sister. Our B&B, half way between Newquay and St. Austell, was quiet and comfortable and a central point from which to go exploring. There were so many places of interest that it was sometimes hard to decide what to do each day and as we saved some of the museums for rainy days we never did get to them. We did quite a bit of tramping round to counteract the big farmhouse breakfasts and Cornish ice cream. The rhododendrons were spectacular at both the Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Victorian-era estate of Lanhydrock, along with many other beautiful trees and shrubs that we can't grow in the Rocky Mountains. At St. Ives we wandered along the cliff-top path and at Falmouth we walked up ... read more

Of course that doesn't include two ferry rides; one of them in a driving rain in an open 25-foot boat with six passengers, four bikes and the captain. And, fortunately for us, it does not distinguish between miles pedaled and miles pushed. Hubris has no place in the hills of Cornwall and any pride I had in the strength of my legs was left by the roadside hours ago. Mathew, our hostel host, snears at the idea that the hills of Scotland can hold a candle to Cornwall. We deeply hope he is right as Kathy and I have concluded the number of hills we have walked up as too many to count. There are ... read more

I started this blog intending to maintain it throughout my road trip in the USA in 2010 but although I did take the trip and had a fabulous time......the blog got left by the wayside. In 2011 I took another trip, island hopping around the Cyclades Islands, Greece for 6 weeks, and yet again I failed to maintain the blog other than the notebook records I always keep. Soooooo.....for my 2012 trip I am going to try to record the whole thing right from the planning stages, through to its conclusion. I am just beginning to look at the many possibilities out there and no decisions are made yet, but the trip will hopefully begin around mid September and last until the end of October, depending on what I can afford!... read more
