Trying to trial pack today. Our trip out and back we can have 30kgs the internal flights in Australia only allow us 23kgs. Trying to pack for a 3 3/4 month trip where it will be hot to cold and wet is a royal pain in the bum. Looks like we will be doing lots of washing. We then have to pack our carry on Bergans. lucky for us I am allowed a lap top bag as well and Alex is allowed a big handbag. Camera, paperwork, laptop, iPad, charging cables and everything else. The bad news is that I cannot fit in my fly fishing gear so I’ll have to buy some in New Zealand. But, it is all made better because Alex nipped up the shop for a bottle of NZ Marlborough plonk. Well, we now have 7 sleeps to go and tonight marks my penultimate night shift before I hand in my Police id card (for safe keeping???) before I start my epic 4 1/2 months off work to embark on our trip of a lifetime. At the moment Alex and I keep discussing our excitement factor and at the moment I guess I have to admit it’s at about 3/10. I think the moment we start packing it will zoom up and the moment I leave home on our train journey to Heathrow airport it is gonna go sky high. I’m certainly not bothered by the thought of a 26 1/2 hour journey (35 1/2 hrs door to door). Bring it on. That’s why god invented inflight entertainment, iPads, booze and sleeping pills! To everybody that have ... read more

The most memorable part of my visit to Cambridge was a short stay in the city of Ely – the loveliest place I have ever been at. Unlike other diminutive English towns that we had passed by, Ely seemed very strange. A gigantic cathedral, which towered over everything around, struck our eyes as we approached the city by train. Because of its enormous size, it looked fabulous against the backdrop of two-story brick houses. That magnificent building was Ely Cathedral. And yet it was closed for some reason, I could enjoy its external beauty forever. Near the cathedral there was a local fair where people sold all kinds of handmade things (shawls, paintings, carvings, etc.). There I tried one of the tastiest homemade pies in my life, and it was so palatable that I bought two. ... read more

Today is Hereward the Wake Day. Today a visit to Ely and the Fens. Another bus trip and yet another cathedral built on the proceeds of wool. The night was cold in Suzy despite having the heating turned up. Still better in the cold in Suzy than at home I say. Any trip away is a bonus even in the bitterly cold of a January day. A little snow fell on the roof but not enough to stick . It was too cold for that. Kathrein has been acting up. She goes up but fails to respond to the command to come on down. Eventually after much trying she does give up, we win and she comes down. For those not familiar with our friend Kathrein she is an all singing, all dancing German satelitte dish ... read more

Most intense travel day so far! Started the day at 7 am, bus trip at 2 then a 7 hour bus ride from Paris to London. I started chatting to an Australian next to me, she had been living in England for 5 years and had done alot of travel! The 7 hours flew by with an added bonus of tips for my time in London and also for Asia. The euro train was a new experience going through the channel and then an announcement came over the speaker... 'Remember to drive on the left hand side of the road!' And the driver just moved to the left hand side of the road and continued driving as if he hadn't spent the last 5 hours driving on the right hand side :) The customs was interesting ... read more
