Cambridge, England~ London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay I have to admit we absolutely love the Olympics. The fact that they are being held in London this year...while were here, is amazing. So, the torch is being run all over the country. Here's a little history from
http://www.london2012.com/torch-relay/about/ ...The torch was lit in Greece and then arrived in the UK May 18 2012. It would travel over 70 days through 1,000 cities, viallges, and towns throughout the country. It was carried by over 8,000 inspirational people who were all nominated and chosen. They included the young and old, present and former athletes and olympians, other famous people, and military members.
We looked and saw the Torch Relay would be coming through Cambridge-which is 20 min away-and we had to go. The event was free of charge and they had many free goodies as well. Later reports said more then 80,000 people lined the streets to watch it come into Parkers Piece where they had a stage set up along with a lot of tents selling antiques, clothes, books, food, etc. We chose to do the park and ride outside of Cambridge as many of the streets had
been closed. What a great choice we made! We arrived early to Parkers Piece and caught some of the live entertainment they were offering. Many different style carnival and acrobatic acts. They were all pretty good.
We walked around the area and through part of the city. The weather was usual...scattered rain and clouds mixed with hot sunshine. Luckily we were well prepared with jackets and umbrellas. While shopping in the tents Nick found a few old 80s records for his mini collection and I bought a very cool bottle opener and vintage door key that I have since turned into a necklace. 😊
To escape the rain we decided to stop in for some mexican food in this tiny little restaurant right outside the area. Its called Nanna Mexico. Great food portions at great prices! I think Nick got a Big Ass Burrito and I got some kind of chicken taco. All super tasty! Their website:
http://www.nannamexico.com/ After we ate and drank we headed to stake out a place to view the torch. We ended up near the corner where the torch would enter Parkers Piece. We waited and waited as more and more people arrived.
As the torch grew closer we noticed a bus drop off someone else holding a torch. We were shocked we had chosen the exact spot where the two torches would later be kissing and the guy with the torch was former Olympic (UK) medalist Iwan Thomas. An older woman in her late 60's or early 70's brought the torch to him. We were so close it was amazing! We got some really great photos. After the torch passes the security let us fill the streets and enter Parkers Piece.
One thing I forgot to mention is we saw a woman and her daughter with the young great dane. He was a beautiful little guy that really didn't want to be a part of what was going on including all the attention he was of course gaining. He made my 2nd dane siting since in the UK.....actually in Europe for that matter.
We hung out a little bit and watched part of the concert and performance then made our way back to the bus stop to head back to the car park. Unfortunatley everyone else had the same idea. We waitied for quite a long while until we could
catch our bus to get home but of course, my charismatic husband always finds new friends in line. 😊
We had a great time. It was a wonderful once in a lifetime experience and I hope everyone enjoys the photos!!
