Apologies to our readers for the lack of updates to our blog. Our holiday has entered hibernation mode and not much has been happening lately worth blogging, however there are a couple of updates going back a wee while which should have been done earlier. Nevertheless here they are - B & J Oops! Got my dates mixed up again, last blog should have been Sept. 9-10! We arrived at Calais at around 6pm after initially trying to avoid the motorways but found it impossibly slow driving through the busy streets of Dunkerque. We were unsure if we needed a motorway sticker or not but decided to take our chances for the short stretch to Calais which we managed without any problems. The next ferry was due to leave at 8.10pm so we booked our passage ... read more

D+5 Maidenhead It was good having a rest day in Oxford. We needed a break to sort ourselves out after 4 days on the road and Joy needed some well deserved retail therapy. Although we have had a lot of rain thankfully it has been dry everytime we made or struck camp. Our tent is a Terra Nova Solar 2 Plus but quite small inside to pack up panniers and carry out normal chores etc. Whilst this camping lark is a bit like a busman's holiday for me, for Joy its a bit of a novelty. However I'm surprised how quickly she is adapting to it all. She already knows exactly where everything is in her panniers even if she doesn't know what it is used for - she is carrying some spares and tools for ... read more

Hi Rachel here, interrupting our African adventure stories (being sent months late - sorry) to say a quick hello for Christmas. Christmas is only a few days away, which is very exciting. We got into the Christmas spirit with a visit to Munich on the first weekend of December, where we visited our dear friend Vicki. We had a day skiing and looked around the beautiful Christmas markets. Of course I started playing carols in November and am very much enjoying the nights closing in, the Christmas decorations in the shops, the carol singers and just the buzz of Christmas in Winter here. We will be spending Christmas and New Year with our families and are looking forward to it. I am also very excited about starting a new job as a Year 5 Teacher at ... read more

Ok so I haven't been doing much lately. Staying in Maidenhead, watching football and cricket, playing pool and hanging out with friends. But that is plenty for now. Thought you all might like to have a peek at who Im hanging out with. The other day we went out to Smokey Joes. Met some friends there and spent the night drinking and dancing. Our new housemate went with us too. Oh, forgot. We have a new housemate. His name is Johannas; or just Jo. He has a little girl which is often running around the house on the weekends. She's cute, and pretty quiet for a 4 year old. Jo is from South Africa and has been lots of places. He's an easy guy to get along with and works as an electrical engineer, just down ... read more

Feeling quite sniffy as I leave Compton Lacey. What a special bunch of people. In some ways this has felt like home more than my flat which I also leave in the next week. People are always more important than places - or perhaps they just add so many other dimensions to the experience of place. It is still a month before I leave but this feels like the first step and I am happy and sad at the same time. Didn't Shakespeare talk about parting being "sweet sorrow"? (What a wise man!) This is really a bit of a test to see how the blog looks. If you're viewing it, then welcome. I hope you'll keep in touch over the next months or years. more soon...... read more
