Sadly, our last day in Lucerne, and now our long awaited holiday is almost over. Aftger breakfast Gary and I wandered the banks of the River Reuss looking at the Saturday morning market stalls.
We then packed up, checkout and and crossed the bridge for the last time for our train to Zurich. The ride is less than an hour with some lovely views of Lake Zurich in the last few minutes. After leaving the train we somehow managed to figure out how to walk to our accommodation, the Sorel Hotel Rütli, which was luckily only around a five minute walk. We had originally booked to stay at the Hotel Adler, but at the last minute they emailed to say that they were renovating so couldn't honour our reservation. It was a mad rush to find something else, but in hindsight we were very pleased as we loved the Hotel Rütli.
We checked in and were lucky enough to be able to access our rooms straight away. The rooms were quite large, modern and comfortable so very happy.
This is my review of the Hotel Rütli http://www.tripadvisor.com.au/ShowUserReviews-g188113-d275365-r196255373-Sorell_Hotel_Rutli-Zuric.html
We then headed straight out to spend the afternoon on a self guided walking tour
of Zurich's Aldstadt.
We walked right down to Lake Zurich, stopping along the way to climb the tower of the Grossmünster for the beautiful view of Zurich. We also briefly stopped in the Fraumünster fo see Chagal's stained glass.
We looked out at Lake Zurich but decided against another cruise. We were hungry by then, so called into the Sternen Grill for lunch. A casual restaurant, it seemed to be takeaway or standup eating downstairs, and sit down eating upstairs, but with shared long tables. Fine by us. The boys as usual had their habitual schnitzel, while Gary and I had the most amazing fish and chips with lake perch. So flavoursome and delicious.
The boys wandered off shopping then, so Gary and I walked the length of Bahnofstrasse to the station to purchase our 9 o'clock pass for the trip we were planning for Sunday morning.
We then managed to find our way up to the city towers for more gorgeous views of Zurich and the river, before stopping in a bar for an afternoon glass of wine. We did a little last minute shopping for yet another Swiss watch for Gary!
Finally back to the Hotel Rütli, for a freshen up
before the final dinner of our holiday. We had pre-booked this too when we thought that we were going to stay at the Hotel Adler. The Adler has a Swiss restaurant named the Swiss Chuchi which was quite well known for its fondues. We hadn't had a fondue since arriving in Switzerland and there was no way that I was leaving without trying one in the country that invented them.
Our dinner was absolutely delicious. We shared a traditional cheese fondue with a basket o bread to dip. We enjoyed it so much that we needed a second basket! After that I had pork cordon bleu with vegetables. We walked back to our hotel for our final night in Europe for this visit.
