Our last day 😞 We felt that we had seen enough of Zurich, for our short trip, so decided to catch the train to Schloss Am Laufen to see the Rhine Falls.
We had purchased our tickets the day before when we had walked down Bahnhofstrasse to the station. We had purchased the Zurich 9 o'clock pass, which enabled us to catch public transport anywhere in the Zurich area. If you use it during the week, you cannot travel until after 9.00am, but as this was a weekend we could use it anytime.
It was only around a half an hour train ride to the Schloss am Laufen stop. We got off and firstly explored the Schloss itself – an interesting house with some really spooky pictures.
We then climbed down the steps to the various viewing platforms of the Falls. They were really quite spectacular, not particularly high, but very, very wide. The bottom platform had us perched within a few metres of the water, the sound, and splashing was incredible! We were really pleased that we had come to see them. There did not appear to be any boats available, as I have read, but possibly that was
because it was the middle of winter.
We then returned to Zurich and caught the tram down to Café Odeon. We had read about the history of this Café on line and thought it would be an interesting place – unfortunately we were wrong. It was totally packed, but we were lucky (or unlucky) enough to grab a table. We all ordered burgers and can comfortably say that they were some of the worst burgers we have ever eaten. At least the wine was nice, lol.
After lunch we returned to the Hotel Rütli to finish packing up and to have our showers before leaving for the airport for our flight home.
Our 9 o'clock passes that we had purchased for the trip to the Rheinfall were also valid to take us to the airport. We generally don't do public transport to airports, but transport here in Zurich is so quick and efficient that we thought we would give it a try. It was a really easy journey, and before we knew it we were at Zurich Airport.
Can't really say we liked the airport very much. There seemed to be a lot more security that we are used to, more like
a US airport. It took a very long time to get through but we made it and caught our flight to Dubai. Luckily we got upgraded to business class from Dubai to Melbourne, which was a real luxury on the A380. It also meant that we got to use the Business Lounge at Dubai for our five hour stopover.
We finally arrived back in Melbourne early in the morning after the most amazing holiday.
