Having walked from Engelberg (or at least the Trübsee) all the way to Meiringen the previous day, I woke to another beautiful blue sky on Monday (18th July) and set about making the most of Meiringen's proximity to some particularly spectacular attractions. Just a short walk upstream alongside the Aare River (which I still remember fondly from having floated down it through the capital Bern back in the summer of 2008; and not so fondly from having floated down it again the following year on my 30th birthday - when it was only May and the water was butt-numbingly cold!) led me to the Aareschlucht, where the river has carved a narrow gorge with walls rising up to two hundred metres high, through which a trail - in places tunneling through the rock; in others bolted ... read more

Four years ago I spent a glorious month hiking and cycling through the Canadian Rocky Mountains, from Banff to Jasper and back (with a detour to Yoho National Park as well) along the Bow Valley and Icefields Parkways. The epic scenery, unforgettable wildlife encounters and sense of being at one with nature that I experienced during those four weeks have been etched into my sub-conscious ever since. But as much as I would love to make it back to the Rockies some day, I have also long since wondered whether I might be able to find a comparable landscape in Europe - and so it is that I found myself planning a trip through the Swiss Alps. And though my partner Linda - with whom I have spent months exploring both the East and West coasts ... read more

All in all, this was one of the most unforgettable travel days we have had, not for action, but for simple beauty of the environment. Our course took us first to Lucerne to see the Kapellbrucke, then on through the Jungfrau/Eiger region of the Swiss Alps, and finally on to Montreux on the "Swiss Riviera". Lucerne is on the shore of Lake Lucerne, at the point where the river Reuss empties into that lake, and the object of our visit was to see the famous Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge) which crosses the Reuss at a diagonal (never have found an explanation for that). It was built in 1333 originally, and is the oldest covered bridge in Europe. Since it is wooden, I am sure that much, if not all, has been replaced over time, and certainly major ... read more

There's just one day left before that I fly to Denmark, so I'll write down the different steps of my travel. First, well, I'll stay a few days in Copenhagen, the capital. Then, I'll take the train to Helsingor, where there's Kronborg's castle. From there, I can take a boat to Helsingborg in Sweden. The next destinations are in Norway. I'll visit Oslo, Bergen and Trondheim. After that, I'll go back to Sweden for the capital, Stockholm. Finally, I'll go to Finland's capital, Helsinki. Some cities may be added to this(already) long list, but we'll see whether or not I have enough time.... read more

After witnessing the breath-taking Matterhorn near Zermatt, we wondered if the next leg of our trip would be as exciting as the past few days had been. In this smallish nation, which ranks as only the 132ndlargest in the world, how much more can there be to see? We had already witnessed so many beautiful sights…..could there be more? Absolutely! The next stop on our journey would take us to Interlaken. Once again, we were able to take a train, which is rapidly becoming our favorite way to travel. This time, we would need to take three trains to get to our next destination and we almost didn’t get off at the right station, save for Merry Jo literally saying, “I think this is our stop.” Smart girl, as it turned out to be the right ... read more

We both agree that train travel is incredibly romantic. We’ve probably watched too many movies….but we’re Americans. We live in a country where railroads are something that blocks traffic at exactly the wrong time while you sit and watch tanker cars, spray painted by exuberant artists roll by while you just sit….but we know that in other countries, it is a way people actually travel…and we find this wonderful. As the train pulls out of the station we are grateful to be on such a wonderful trip. We’d heard about a famous train called “The Glacier Express” that went through the Swiss Alps and we wanted to go. This train offers grand windows and so the world seems only a touch away. This is one of those rare occasions you have a moment where you find ... read more

Last weekend, some of my best friends from college came all the way to Europe for a long weekend! I met them in Geneva, and we spent time in Switzerland and France, around the lake. On the Friday, they got into Geneva at 7am and did touristy things there all day despite being sleep deprived. When I eventually found them in the train station at 7pm (note: there is not a metro in Geneva—there are trains and buses. Don’t waste your time wandering the airport for the metro line; even if the city transport map makes it seem like it exists, it doesn’t), we were ready to go to our hotel, which was in the French town of Evian les Bains. We took a city bus to the French town of Annemasse, and promptly missed our ... read more

The sun rises over the mountains in Interlaken. It is like someone opening up a gift. With each tear and turn of the paper, a priceless gift is revealed. Interlaken feels like landscape overload. The massive mountains surround the little town with small shops, cafes, and a few hostels, bringing a feeling of comfort and security to the area. It was September and the weather was cold, but not cold enough for the accumulation of snow. Thus, the Alps looked dark green from the infinite number of pine trees. Among these pine trees and looking up above, paragliders glided down 5,000-6,000 feet. They swayed back and forth with ease and grace. The gliders seemed to be floating rather than gliding. From ground level, the Alps formed a circle around Interlaken. The Alps were so massive that ... read more

First time going to Switzerland my dad woke me up since I had passed out after my alarm ringing and I almost missed my flight, theres a first time for everything. Made it there and had a lift with a blablacar ride going to Aarau, it was a guy and his mom talking in their own language and in the end I passed out and slept all the way to Aarau. They dropped me off outside the city by the highway and I managed to hitchike into the center of the city. My friend was working all day at the tattoo studio there, but his friends brought me down to the river for a swim and for beers - its like a small piece of paradise, and I would never have found it on my own. ... read more
