Well we're down at the foot of the mountains tonight. I hated leaving heaven. No, I didn't go bungee jumping...Eva wouldn't let me. I did something better....paragliding!! It is the ONLY way to see the Alps. It was so easy and so much fun. E hasn't stopped talking about it all day, I think she's caught the gliding fever. What an incredible sensation. Those of you who know me know that I love the heights...this was the highest I've been without a plane. But for 15 or so glorious minutes I felt like a bird. I'm ready to go back up again, and again, and again but we're leaving Switzerland tomorrow. On our way to Munich for a night and then the night train to Paris. We round off the trip there before flying to London ... read more

After yesterday's massive effort, we definitely needed a rest. In a trek, a rest doesn't mean lying on your back to get sun tanned; rather it means a nice and easy walk. This is exactly what we had today. We started with a short descent to the town of Champex with its fine lake. We stocked up with fresh bread and fruit, so we spent maybe half an hour feeding the ducks with yesterday' bread. In the beginning the ducks were pretty far from us, so I went to bring them, leading them with little pieces of bread. It was really funny. (Ron and Dana named the picture “Anat Akka” after the wild geese leader in Selma Lagerlof’s Nils Holgersson). The walk up the valley was partially in the woods and partially between green fields and ... read more

so...today i did the coolest thing i have ever done in my entire life. mom and i went paragliding. she saw a brochere and called yesterday, and then we went this morning. i can only say that jumping off a cliff and having nothing to hold you but a parachute, was the best thing i have ever done. we got right next to a waterfall, and saw a rainbow and everything. it was incredible. i will admit this now even though i couldn't admit it earlier, but i was a little nervous at the top kniwing that my instructions were to run as fast as i could down the hill, and then when it seemed like i could't run any farther, give into the sensation that i was going to fall off the cliff. so, i'm ... read more

This is supposed to be the most difficult day of the trek, and it better be. I'm sitting now at Relais L'Arpette, after this very long and tough day, and I'm sooo tired. We started before 8am with a nice path, climbing gently up the hill. When we reached Chalet du Glacier at 1583m the path took a steep turn... The higher we went, the steeper it became. No wonder in fact, as we were simply facing a wall in front of us. You look at the wall and it seems absolutely impassable. It's sooo high. The last 400m climb were the hardest. The effort was tremendous. I couldn't believe I could make it but of course there wasn't any choice. Going back wasn't an option. Finally at 1pm we reached the "Fenêtre L'Arpette", a beautiful ... read more

In fact, we tricked right away... from the beginning... Dana's knees weren't doing very well and after contemplating the whole morning, she asked to take the cable-car to Col du Balme. We climbed several hundred meters in just 15 minutes. Fun... The view from the top is amazing - of course. France is on one side and Switzerland is on the other. A small stone marks the border. Crossing it I can't help thinking of World War 2. Were there any Jews climbing here trying to sneak through to Switzerland? Or maybe this point was too easy to get to and therefore guarded? They definitely couldn't use the cable car, that's one thing I'm sure about. So now we really start walking. A very long descent is ahead of us. As we go the valley opens ... read more

My last night in Aumbach there was a giant thunderstorm and it started a fire somewhere near the town and the local fire brigade was summoned, but german outback style, via means of an air-raid siren. I could have sworn the allies had returned for one last bombing run and it freaked me out. I took it as a good as sign as any that I made a good decision to leave that next morning. The first leg of my european loop; first stop Zurich in Switzerland and then the 'quiet' town of Interlaken in Switzerland. My four fantatic weeks in Bavaria had come to a close and as I took the dog for one final last walk in the woods I realised how much I would miss that place but this was a small section ... read more

Hello! I am currently situated in the town of Interlaken Switzerland. I have been here for a few days now and unfortunately brought the rain with me, but it doesn´t matter because this hostel is awesome. I am probably one of the few Canadians here amongst a midst of "fill in the blank" State" t-shirt wearing Americans, needless to say I get many "Little America" comments, but we all know Vancouver beats Michigan· Dakota· Texas anyday. This place is the extreme sport capital of the world, but due to Bad weather many of the activities have been cancelled. I wasn´t happy to wake up at 7 this morning to find out my canyoning trip had been cancelled, so I went Parasailing instead (only because Sky diving was way out of the budget, and besides, what else ... read more

Interlaken in Switzerland has been the highlight of the trip for a number of reasons. * Everywhere you look its just breathtaking views. * I went paragliding off the top of a mountain for my birthday. * Beautiful clean air and lakes full of sparkling clear water. * Its just a great place. We ended up staying in Interlaken for 5 nights which is longer than we had originally planned so this is where not stopping with the football hooligans in Heidelberg paid off (no offence meant to any English footy supporters) On the way into Interlaken we took one of the ‘Jungpass’ mountains pass which was both a spectacular and hair-raising drive. We stopped to get fuel at the bottom of the pass and the brakes were smoking so much I thought they were on ... read more

We are actually righting this entry about 1 month after the fact but will keep the entry dates true to our travels for our own records. We have copped a little abuse about why we have taken so long to create new updates, but it's basically because we didn't want to sit in internet cafes all day when the weather and sights were so beautiful. We are now back in UK and the weather is crap so it's a great time to do some more updates. Anyone who has travelled in Europe and UK will know that when the sun is out you get outdoors, as you never know how long it may last. So back to the blog! 4th July 2006 and apparently on the other side of the Atlantic the Americans are celebrating their ... read more
