I finally got over the Gotthard Pass this afternoon. It was tough going in places, but I managed most of it. Amazingly at one point I managed to pass three cars and a horse driven carriage! I was going slightly faster than the carriage and the drivers were biding their time to make their move. As they waited I sneaked past them on the inside. They graciously left enough space for me. I think I was doing a speedy 8 or 9 kilometres per hour at the time. When I was behind the coach I had to bide my time as well. I didn't think I could keep up a sustained enough burst of speed to pass on the outside. A few yards later I made my move when the road on the inside widened to ... read more

I entered Switzerland last Thursday after following Veloroute 15 along the German side of the Rhine for about fifteen kilometres after crossing from France to Neuenburg am Rhein. It was a lovely path with a gravel surface. The Rhine was flowing fast over rapids and around little stoney, forested islands. Cormorants flew up and down along it. Now I want to cycle along the Rhine. Then in the space of one kilometre or so I crossed the Rhine from Weil am Rhine (Germany) to Saint Louis (France) and then into Basel (Switzerland). It was late in the day so I pressed on to the campsite rather than explore Basel. Tadhg notes in his diary of the Flight "...and numerous boats afford a means of leaving it and getting to it (Basel) from Flanders and the country ... read more

http://www.wanderland.ch/en/routes/route-0676.html This weekend it was off to Overalppass and then over a 2400m+ pass. This was also a perfect weekend for that, warm and sunny. There was a big storm that came Wed - Fri. This storm apparently dumped tonne of snow in the mountains - in middle of July! This became clear as soon as the train stopped at Oberalppass. The snow was visible right at the bottom. At the trail there was a huge map showing the Vier Quelle trail. Unfortunately there was no mention of Tomasee which was our first stop. There were a bunch of people going on this trail, so we started on it too. The trail instantly started climbing steeply and had snow from the start. This was all wrong, the trail was suppose to be flat, slightly downhill for ... read more

Today’s plan: Visit Wilhelm Tell and go to the top of a mountain in Andermatt where you can see 600 mountain peaks on a clear day. Today's reality: We drove to Altdorf and made a very quick stop to see the statue of Wilhelm Tell and then got back in the car before the rain hit. After that, we drove to Andermatt in the rain and snow, knowing full well that today would not be a “clear day”. So instead of a visit to the top of the Gemstock mountain, we walked around for an hour in the ski village of Andermatt. Certainly not the same, but still interesting. From there, we decided to go to Hergiswil to a glass factory that we had read about. Our guide book had said it was a free attraction, ... read more
