All of you know by now that I have the world's best travel buddy, Mr. Mike. I have a few people who are more than adequate substitutes. You know who you are. I will not mention names, so I don't hurt anyone's feelings. But several articles recently listed traits of bad travel partners. This is from Seeking Good Living: Travel is not his/her first priority-This is hard to find, but during retirement, it becomes a focus, and for some, almost an obsession. I try to keep a proper perspective. The close-minded traveler-If you have chosen wisely, and know your new travel mate, this should not be a problem. On my first trip to Europe, my travel buddy was obsessed with the opera and symphony. And yes, I went a few times, but it certainly was not at the top of my list. I wanted to learn more about the people and culture in Europe. I could listen to the music anywhere. The complainer-I cannot recall a complainer, except on my boat-bike tour last May. There were some Englishmen who were quite difficult. If I do complain, it is usually the weather, mostly
heat and humidity. The pessimist-I would never travel with one. I hope you know your travel buddy well enough before you embark on a big trip. Now, I have met up with people while traveling, and upon getting to know them, sometimes find them to be rather negative. I drop them quickly. The perfectionist-I don't know of any, and I am not sure this would be much fun.The control freak-Certainly, I would head the other way. I once traveled with a wealthy fellow, who was the ultimate cheapskate. When I told him I would dine separately, he was forced to change his ways!Selfie addicted freak-I probably take more photos than most people, but rarely selfies. Once, during a trip, someone will ask me if I want a photo in front of a famous or enjoyable place. But it is not a selfie!
My own list:The cheapskate-I mentioned this already. My hostel staying, overnight sleeping on the Eurail days are over. Also, while I may skip a meal once in a while, I do enjoy the food, since it is a natural bridge to the
local culture, and their people. The know it all-Believe me, your trip does not need to be planned to the minute or hour. Be flexible, follow your instincts, and explore. The scripted route is not always the best! The spendthrift-Some people love to be the center of attention. Some do this by throwing around their $ or credit card. Beware, because they always want something more in return! The floozie-Yes, they lurk around every corner, Russia, Argentina, Italy, Paris, Munich, Colombia, Hong Kong. Some just want a few free drinks, some want more.
I think most of you are smart enough to figure this out. If you have, I would love to hear your comments. I have many stories I could tell. But I will tell you that finding the perfect travel buddy is not easy!
