First and foremost- let me say a HUGE thank you to my aunt Kathy and uncle Dennis for everything they have done to make this happen... It’s Wednesday night and we have just returned to our apartment from our first practice game with Qbik. Zuzu scored one goal and had an assist in our 4-1 victory! The goal was a 1 v 1 slot to the left of the keeper and the assist was a beautiful flick with her back to goal to an oncoming midfielder who had a magnificent finish. The team plays a flat back four, so other than the goal the other team scored, I didn’t do much but switch the point of attack with my feet. The opponent’s goal came off of a set kick just outside the arc. She hit iron ... read more

Okay, due to popular demand, I'm posting some pictures of my building, my room and the corridor I live in. My favourite features are the location, which is close to the university, and the fact that everyone has their own bathroom here, it is almost unheard of to share. Also, I have a heated towel rack, which is pretty cool. My room looks the same now as when I took these pictures, except for a couple recent Ikea additions. ... read more

Hej, jag heter Erin. See? I am learning a very useful language for when I return to Canada haha. Swedish class is going well, better than the Spanish I took at Windsor, but I guess that wouldn’t be difficult considering I did so poorly. In other news, the hockey game was great, I was not bored for a single second and despite the fact they did not seem to be playing as well as they normally would, the home team won. The Swedish Rally is coming up this weekend and I got my ticket for the Karlstad Super Special Stage today. I was pretty excited to find people that wanted to go as much as I did, so we are all going Thursday to the ceremonial start and party in Karlstad. This weekend was busy with ... read more

So, in the tradition of procrastination, I am writing this belated second entry so I can put off school work for a bit today. A lot has happened in the last two weeks since I last wrote, most notably the welcome dinner for the international students, a couple parties, our trip to Örebro and my first two classes (Aspects of Sweden, and “Svenska som främmande språk”...Swedish as a foreign language). In our first week here, we went to Arena and Nöjesfabriken, two clubs in Karlstad. There was also a sangria party in Potatisen, one of the student residences downtown. Apparently these are a somewhat regular occurrence, which would be nice considering its one of the only cost effective ways to drink here...for less than $10 Canadian, you could drink as much sangria as you wanted. So ... read more

Okay, so it’s my first full day in Sweden, and at 4:20, the sun has set in Karlstad. The trip was long, to say the least. I was excited to fly but the waiting time in between flights and train connections made it a very long 24 hours with very little sleep. That and the fact that once I got into Sweden, no one really talks to each other on trains, and my seating to Karlstad from Stockholm was at a 4 person table by myself. On the flight to Stockholm from Paris I sat beside two Swedish men who did not talk the entire time, except when I pointed out the snow while we were landing, and the man beside me, half laughing remarked, "huh...that’s nothing." The plane food was not awful, but it was ... read more
