Yesterday, as per Brayden and Johanna's advice, I grabbed the 11:11 train to Uppsala, a quick 40 minute ride north of Stockholm.
I got there and it was just the crappiest day; raining on and off (it was like I was back in Iceland with all the weather changes) and I experienced probably the strongest wind I've ever been in!
But, I toughed it out and walked around the very cute town for the afternoon. It felt very quaint and homey, somewhat like a downtown Bobcaygeon or Halliburton. There was a massive cathedral that revealed itself as I rounded a corner and of course I wandered in to check it out, after the service was over (and yes Shawn, I took off my hat!)
Uppsala is home to a pretty impressive university campus, Uppsala University, that is spread out nicely across the town. This is where Brayden had studied back in university and I can definitely see why he fell in love with it!
I walked through the botanical garden maintained by the University (apparently that's a big thing here in Northern Europe) and then walked past another, not quite as impressive royal garden in the back
Cathedral
View of the cathedral from atop the hill where the palace is. yard of another not so impressive palace. I couldn't really find that much information on it because the information centre was closed with it being Sunday, nonetheless, I walked around, took some pictures and read the little blurb on the bell tower and cannon that still exist from many many years ago.
This town is where my self-restraint was tested the most when it came to not replacing my entire wardrobe. I ventured (I'm quickly running out of words to describe me aimlessly walking into places) into a really nice men's store with a ton of awesome clothes and shoes, and the guy working there was so nice I felt obligated to buy something... However I was able to resist and moved on to find a bread product to smother my PB on for lunch.
While in the grocery store, I come across a fusion that can only possibly exist in Europe; a Guiness flavoured chocolate bar. And yup that's Guiness the beer alright. So I have to buy that even though it's twice as expensive as my banana and bun. Turns out its actually really really good! Well done Swedish chemists, well done!
I grabbed a
train back to Stockholm and had a siesta before buying a box dinner of Swedish meatballs, mashed potatoes and carrots (honestly so good, even for a grocery store).
I took advantage of my bike pass one last time and pedalled to Espresso House, the Swedish Starbucks, and had dessert for one, because they're all over the place, I figured I couldn't miss trying it... And not bad at all.
A pretty relaxed day, one of those days where you finally are settled in the city and really know what you're doing , starting to feel like more of a traveller than a tourist. It was nice, and a nice way to end my stay in Stockholm.... Off to Finland this afternoon!
