After various tearful goodbyes & expert frenzied packing completed - I headed off to Lund, Sweden on August 21st. It was a perfect summer in the Okanagan, surrounded by family, friends & sunshine - making it that much harder to say goodbye. But it was time. Time get out into the big world again. Kelowna - Seattle - Copenhagen by plane Copengagen - Malmo - Lund by train Lund Central Station - Skanevagen #18 by automobile It was a sunny & windy day in Lund when I arrived, jet lagged & sweating. A wave of uncertainly as to why exactly I had come to this place washed over me while I waited at the Station for Eva to pick me & my overweight luggage. Now that a few days have passed, I am feeling more stable ... read more

So Sweden eh? Havign never been there, I had alot of preconceptions about Swedes and their homeland, all of which turned out to be based on pure fact. Thanks to the beautiful Øresund bridge, I was able to hop on a train, and arrive in Lund no more than an hour later. I was to meet up with Lina, whom along with a friend surfed my couch back in 2006. I messaged her to say what time I would arrive, but did not hear anything back so I went for a walk around the town upon arrival. Many shops and cafés were furnished with Ikea products, there were Saabs and Volvos galore, and nigh on every woman was gorgeous. Three from three for Sweden! After messaging again and getting no respose I set off in search ... read more

I’m tempted to call this the pre-Berlin blog. Yep, I know that was the title two blogs ago, then you saw the blog about Berlin. But I’m going back, March 1-8th...so perhaps it is the pre-Berlin blog.  Again. So SINCE last Berlin trip, its been an absolute whirlwind of madness. I think my to-do lists are secretly mating and producing offspring as I seem to have about 5 sheets of paper with tasks on them on my person at all times. School is one thing. Half Machine is another. My website company has a bit of business going on at the moment so that’s another thing. Then there’s design competitions. Then there’s the travel. Ie: Sterling airlines had a valentine’s sale - 2 flights for the price of one. Amanda and I are going to ... read more

Malmö Red Hawks vs. Nybro whatever! Last days have been interesting! On Wednesday I have gone to an ice hockey match with Svenja's Mentor group. They had their trip planned out and told us about it, me and Hannes thought it sounded like a good idea so we went ahead and invited ourselves to the match. No one seemed to mind and as it turned out I actually knew half the mentor group from the international welcome party already. So off we went, to the Malmö Red Hawks in their stadium! It was raining cats and dogs as we went there so the trip wasn't really worth remembering but we did go to this supermarket where, according to Swedish tradition, I bought a sandwich with red beets and meatballs... Only the sauce wasn't red, but a ... read more

Before heading to Berlin, I thought I better make a quick post-new-years-post. I got back from the UK and Germany and ended up getting straight to work on the final two weeks of our toilet-sign-switching project that I discussed before. We’ve officially named it the Ladies and Mens Room Mixup (LMRM) and spent the first week back finalizing the prototype and testing it out at the club. It went pretty well, we had three elements, the automatic door switching, a wheel with a lever so people could choose which mode they wanted it in (boy/girl, girl/boy, girl/girl, etc) and the touch sensitive poles. People were strangely afraid to touch the poles thinking they’d get electrocuted or something, and it made it more difficult that I, an English speaking, non -drunk-at-a-night-club person was trying to convince them ... read more

So, today, on the 9th of January, I have finally arrived in Lund. The trip by train was really comfortable except for the passport check (in the Schengen zone???) which seemed a bit useless since they let the boy without any papers or reliable story of what he was doing in Denmark in anyway. First 6 hours I sat all alone and watched Disney's Alladin, read. Then when I started sleeping I was woke up by a couple of Germans joining in. Later on I would find out that one of the German girls was heading to Lund as well so once we got off in Copenhagen we traveled the last part together. Of course the train had 'unexpected' problems so we needed to catch a connection in Malmö as well. Feels just like home :). ... read more

What has the month of December brought? A lot of work! Although, not the paying kind so that’s unfortunate though I doubt I would have had time! Christmas in Sweden and Denmark is done nicely - they light up the city streets, Christmas trees are in plazas everywhere and we were singing Swedish, English and French Christmas carols (Jul songs) at the preschool. I’ve since downloaded a Swedish and Danish Christmas CD so I can sing along, lol. I think the best way to explain what I’ve been upto is in photos and videos, I’ve already explained our bathroom switching project, so the videos are here: http://jonaseriksson.blip.tv there’s a few there. Here on my Flicker account: http://www.flickr.com/photos/8517602@N08/ there’s photos of the toilet project as well as photos from the Half Machine Symphony Orchestra performance. We’ve received ... read more

See, I told you I’d update it after the weekend; and in this case its a good idea! This week is going to be insane, we have school from 9-4 nearly every day and the one day we didn’t I was working at the preschool (yesterday). So the weekend went like this, Friday night project based outing to a club, Saturday night helping on the barge with a concert, and Sunday night, Harry Potter. Friday night we prepared some ‘interventions’. The project we’re working on currently is to re-establish social connections between people in the night club setting. Currently, people tend to cluster in small groups of friends, and are generally closed to opportunities for social connections be it for purely social interaction reasons or for romantic ones. People tend to get protective of themselves at ... read more

So its 1:38am. I’m getting fairly used to ‘this time’. Its my catching up time. It usually lasts anywhere from 1-4 hours. I’ve just paused my work on a paper that I’m writing since I’ve been researching and writing for about 3 hours and haven’t even hammered out a full page. This is disturbing but maybe it means the beginning of a great paper because of the thought I’m putting into it. Maybe not. So I’ve made a list of things to talk about. Its...extensive. I really need to update this blog a few times a week rather than once every 3 as I think this will be another long one. As an aside and for your audio expansion needs, I’m listening to two Danish groups: Analogik and Natasja Saad. One electronic with Balkan tones, and ... read more

My hands smell like garlic. Yes, I know you wanted to know that about my travels. It’s important, not really, but I was cutting garlic earlier for my dinner (tonight was traditional Swedish food, mos and kottebulle (mashed potatoes and meatballs) yep. I was lazy but I spent nearly an hour and a half cooking eggplant napoleon last night so... it’s a trade off. Anyway, point is, it’s weird, typing and smelling garlic. So I’ve learned some important things. Danish speaking: Jeg vil gerne have flæskeskeg halvsteg. I will have roast pork, rare. Yeah, makes no sense but amuses the hell outta me. Let’s see, I went to a Swedish class on Monday, it’s Swedish level 2. Didn’t do so well. Actually, cross that out, I did great considering the people in front of me have ... read more
