Imagine a small Swedish village, complete with gorgeous cabins spreading up the hillside, snow-covered trees in every direction, a huge mountain backdrop on one side, an enormous frozen lake on the other. This is Åre. It was an absolute joy to return here again. Stepping off the train, the crisp, mountain air instantly made every minute of the six hour journey worth it. One year on since our last visit, Adam and I were here again with Luke and Maria, now with little Liam in tow! But even better, this year Kyrie, Robert and Sheryle were all here too for the last leg of family time before the Odell family once again bid each other farewell and headed off to different corners of the globe. Knowing this week would be the last time we'd have all ... read more

A visit to Sweden wouldn’t be complete without at least seeing (or perhaps eating) a reindeer, the subject of every child’s Christmas dream and the quintessential ‘Northern’ beast. There was no way I was going to take the easy way out, having come this far I refused to visit theme parks, petting zoos are worse still, introduce myself awkwardly to an air-tight plastic pack at the supermarket. I insisted that my first reindeer experience would be in the wild with no weapons, machines or fat Santas (although if he or she wished to air-freight me a new season snowboard in the near future I wouldn’t complain). Sweden is big. I’m not talking Australian outback big or Russia big but on a European stage they certainly receive their fair share of jealous stares over the back ... read more

Gros becs! Hej då! ... read more

Ah, following on from Christmas in Sweden, was a quick trip to the family-friendly ski-field of Åre, in the Swedish mountains near the Sweden-Norwegian border. Åre is apparently Sweden's number one ski resort, consisting of four separate ski areas and cute little villages containing everything from beauticians to coffee houses to trinket stores. The scenery is breathtaking, particularly from the very top of the largest mountain which overlooks the whole area. Framed by low sweeping mountains covered with pine forests, all overlooking a majestic, deep and frozen lake, it really is quite spectacular. Reason enough to go on its own, even without the skiing and the opportunity to spend a little more quality time with Luke, Maria and the child-to-be. At 8 months, Maria really was doing marvelously well to be moving about as freely and ... read more

Sweden and Norway: (very sorry, still no photos. will get them scanned and digitalised at some point, I promise!) For my birthday, my lovely mother gave me a week in a timeshare in Sweden. Very exciting. We picked it because it was easy to get to without a car, being within walking distance of a train line. I flew into Trondheim, in northern Norway, from London where I’d spent a week catching up with friends. Trondheim at a glance was very pretty, but I had to catch my train to Storlien, where I’d be staying. Storlien is a tiny town perched in the mountains just over the border in to Sweden. It’s usually a winter attraction because of the world class cross country skiing in the area but in the summer it has beautiful hiking on ... read more

Sweden Day ThreeAmanda Avar’s and Train Back to Stockholm I’m pretty sure the jet-lag hit. Michelle and I had planned on riding bikes to the train station to buy tickets to go back to Stockholm, but I was dead to the world when she tried to wake me in the morning. When she got there the place was closed, but luckily they had a machine where she could buy the tickets. Mom and Cathy needed tickets but we didn’t because we had our Eurorail passes. Sven-Eric took me to the store to find cardamom, and some sort of salt and something that is used to make thick milk for Mormor. I can't go into detail about what thick milk is, but let me just say that the "good grandaughter" in me wanted to find it, but ... read more

Sweden Day TwoAmanda Dinner at Anki’s and Michelle’s Manual Adventure Today we got to Ostersund at 7:30 AM. I was joking with Michelle that I don’t think I remembered what 7:30 AM looked like. We had noticed on the train that it didn’t ever seem like it was night because it hadn’t gotten too dark. I had on an eye mask, but Michelle said it started to get light again around 3 AM. Mom and Sven-Eric (related to us in a way that is complicated) picked us up from the train station. Elsie is Mormor’s cousin and speaks perfect English, Sven-Eric is Elsie’s husband and he doesn’t speak any English. This doesn’t stop Sven-Eric from trying to talk to us, always in Swedish. When we got to Elsie’s and Sven-Eric’s, Elsie had already made us breakfast. ... read more
