The boys decided to go to The rock of Gibraltar for the day, Andrea and I decided all that time in a bus to see a rock really wasn't how we wanted to spend the day so the boys headed off and we had a lovely sleep in, relaxed brekkie and headed into town to look at the shops.
Well that was the plan, unfortunately it was Mother's Day Sunday in Europe so most of the shops were closed. We did find a couple of smaller ladies clothing shops open and managed a couple of purchases each before catching the shuttle back toward the boat, on the way spotted a market toward the port area and fortunately the bus stopped to let a couple of people on, so we got off.
Spent the next hour or so browsing the stalls, was pleasant way to spend an hour in the very warm sunshine, before wandering back to the ship. We grabbed a quick lunch, threw our togs on under our clothes and headed back off the ship to the beach which was a quick ten minute walk down the road.
Not many swimming but us hardy kiwis inched our way into the
Beautiful beach
A little sand but mostly finely crushed shells, a bit hard on the feet water before finally taking the plunge, could see why most were just sunbathing was a wee bit on the chilly side, especially when you consider the last time I was in the ocean was the warm water in Rarotonga - extreme contrast!
The other difference between us and the locals was we kept our old saggy white boobs firmly covered.....the locals not so much!
Another hour of so sunbathing and picking the little ground off shells off our wet feet so we could get our shoes on, and a quick walk back to the boat with our wet togs soaking through our shorts for that lovely I've wet my pants feeling.
A quiz or two, silly game show about what people know about their partners, more alcohol, lots more food and bed....all this eating and drinking is exhausting!
Stephens note on The Rock of Gibraltar
Vicky was not keen on going the 'the Rock ' and preferred to sit on the beach , can't imagine why. It was a 2 hour bus ride from Malaga to Gibraltar. The country side is dry with lots of seaside resorts and odd houses in the middle of nowhere , all built in stone
white or brown.
When you enter Gibraltar is a new country and run by the Poms. After going through customs you actually drive over the airport Tarmac to get in. It's strange waiting for a plane to land on you
You walk though the the old town ( it was Sunday so everything was closed except the tourist shops ) to the top of the Main Street for the cable car. Had to get some money from the machine but all you could get was Gibraltar pounds but later found they accept euros.
Up the cable car , some l500 odd meters to the top of the rock. Stunning views and vistas , you can even see Africa . You can see why it's strategic.
The Gibraltar apes were mostly sleepy except they would jump on and off the odd car or taxi van. We walked another few hundred feet up to an old gun placement at the top which was closed because it was Sunday . It didn't stop Garry, over the fence he goes for a good old look .
Great to have gone and visited. Very interesting historically and very English in Spain.
Back to Malaga just
in time to set sail for the next stop
SEA DAY
I love sea days....what did we do? Slept in, ate, drank, had a game of bingo where Stephen nearly won and the rest of us lost dismally. Played a few more quiz games..lost dismally, sat in the sun had a swim in the pool. Ate, drank, read my book and slept ...... Did I mention I love sea days!
The sailing was smooth all day until tea time when it got a little bit of a roll on, then a bit more and by the time bedtime came round walking was a little difficult, didn't sleep well at all with things banging around a bit and feeling like we were sleeping in a very rocky rocking chair!
