Day 32 – September 24, 2016 - Redondela, Spain to Pontevedra, Spain – 14.3 Miles
When I opened my window this morning, it was very cloudy and looked like it could rain any minute. Upon leaving the hotel we had to backtrack some to get back on the trail. Once on the trail it had us winding through some narrow streets of the city of Cesantes where we passed by a lady getting ready to do her laundry.
We then crossed the busy N-550 and climbed up steeply where we turned onto a forest track that took us through the eucalyptus woods where we happened to come across some pilgrims sleeping. A little further on we passed by a large wooden frame filled with various shells left by pilgrims.
When we reached the city of Arcade, we stopped at Café Pili for some coffee. The café not only had good coffee but also had some of the most amazing pastries/cakes which I was able to restrain myself from trying any.
After leaving the café we continued walking and soon came to the stone bridge over the rio Verdugo that was built in 1795. While crossing the bridge
we spotted a young lady dressed in a wedding dress riding a horse in and out of the river. It appeared she was doing some sort of photo shoot.
After crossing the bridge, we climbed up some stairs and followed the path that took us away from the main road which had us winding up and down before crossing back over the main road. We now crossed over the river where we saw two swans and then continued up the ancient paved pilgrim way where we alternated between paths and quiet country lanes.
After reaching the high point for the day, we crossed the road where we meet this young gentleman who played his guitar while whistling a song to us. There also was a gentleman there who was selling some leather items he had made which I bought a cute hiker’s boot and yellow arrow that I attached to my backpack.
As we bid farewell to the gentlemen, we once again alternated between quiet asphalt roads and green pathways eventually passing by an old mine. A little further down the road we come to the Capela da Santa Marta where we meet these two young gals
from Germany who we had a nice conversation with as we walked.
Before long we come to what I am going to call “the fork in the road” as we have to make a decision on whether to walk alongside the busy highway into Pontevedra or take the alternative scenic and quiet river route. Of course this was a no brainer as we opted for the alternative river route which took us on a nice shady woodland path alongside the river.
Upon exiting the woodland area and leaving the river behind us, we walked through the tunnel under the road and soon rejoined with the original trail on the main busy road making our way into Pontevedra to locate our hotel for the night.
