Habla un poco de espanol. Habla usted ingles? After the euphoria of the Rando Silex cycle race and my birthday the next day (49) the bubble well and truly burst. I call it the “ East- Enders moment”. You know the bit at the end when someone says “ My life couldn’t get much better than this.” The drums play the theme tune and you know in the next episode that everything will go wrong and their life will fall apart. Well you all know the story from the blog. Dads do not go shopping at Iceland now. My mate Simon summed it up in an E mail when he said “I Bet you couldn’t swipe the Icesave card through the cheeks of your arse worrying about the prospect of losing it all.” The prospect of ... read more

2nd November -Sunday Spain Vilanova Park - Vilanova I La Geltru, Barcelona . (Double click on photos to enlarge . Not doing the map at the moment as the software keeps crashing.) Our last days in Tarascon were cold and wet. The threat of snow made up our minds to move on. In the last couple of days there, we met a British couple who had arrived late one night. They introduced themselves and explained they were on their first trip abroad. After chatting they turned out to be even more of innocents abroad than we were! Frighteningly so, actually. They had sold their business and house , bought a caravan and car and set off for Spain. I don’t think they had caravanned before and seemed a bit ill prepared. The bloke seemed especially clueless. ... read more

What a beautiful city! Sitges is brighter than Barcelona, cuter, and younger. I don't feel like sightseeing here; I just want to wander around by the ocean and pop in and out of shops. One of my favorite things when I travel is to go in local shops and look at the clothes, jewelry, and shoes. I like to buy unique souveniers: barret, shoulder bag, shoes, accessories. I walk towards the ocean, following the sound of the waves. An elderly man jogs down the beach, wearing nothing but a little speedo. I crack up and look around to see if anyone else is amused, wanting to share the moment. But no one seems to notice, which cracks me up again. The Mediterranean Sea is wild and strong and blue. The waves roll over each other, unfolding ... read more

I decide to venture out of Barcelona for a couple of days. Sitges, a small city just south of Barcelona along the coast, has been highly recommended. The entire trip from my hostel in Barcelona to my hostel in Sitges, luggage in tow, is conducted in the freezing, pouring rain! I'm wearing my rain coat, holding my scant little umbrella against the biting wind, and walking as fast as I can, my suitcase splashing water onto me as I drag it along behind. Note to self: invest in a backpacker's backpack and PACK MORE LIGHTLY! Only one pair of jeans, not 3. Only one book, not 3. Only one journal, not 2. And NO LAPTOP! When I arrive at my hostel in Sitges, thoroughly soaked and aching because of my luggage, I'm disappointed. Oh, the place ... read more

So today is going to get a short entry because it was mostly a travel day. We did, however, do some important stuff today, #1 being finally having a real swim in the Mediterranean! We started the day with a trek to the local “Chinese Store” (apparently a genre around here, as that’s what people called it everywhere) that had everything in the universe at decent prices, including adaptors for a fifth of what we had paid for them the night before : ( I nabbed some decent-looking long shorts, an “athletic” shirt and some sandals and was ready to take on the beach. We booked our tickets and headed out to Sitges, a town near Barcelona which we were told had good beaches. We weren’t disappointed. While the water was a bit cold, the beach ... read more

A few weeks ago (ya, I know I am doing this entry a little late), I went on a daytrip with my program to Penedes, Sitges, and Sant Piere. About 20 of us hopped on a greyhound at 8 am and headed to our first destination, Codorniu, a cava and wine vineyard in Penedes. This was about a 30 minutes bus ride from Barcelona. We started with a tour of the plantation and factory, and then we learned about how cava is made and went underground to check out the whole process. Cava is the spanish name for champagne. If it is not made in France, you cant call is champagne. There are two requirements for something to counted as cava...first it must go through a second fermentation process in the bottle (this is where yeast ... read more

I took a daytrip to Penedes, Sitges, and Sant Piere. Penedes is only a forty minute drive from the Barcelona city center. Here we took a tour of the Codorniu cava vineyard, where we learned how cava was made. Cava is essentially champagne but it is technically illegal (in the world of wine laws) to call a substance "champagne" unless it’s from a specific region in France. Hence the name "sparkling wine" for bubblies coming from California. In Spain they call it cava. For something to be cava it must have two requirements; first it must go through a second fermentation process in the bottle (this is where yeast is added with the sugar content, making the bubbles) and second it must age for at least nine months once completed. At this vineyard in particular they ... read more

Sorry it has been so long since I have blogged, I have been a busy, busy traveler! On February 1st my friends on my program and I took the train down to Sitges for Carnaval, which is the biggest carnaval celebration in Cataluna. It is only a half an hour train ride to Sitges, and do to some rule involving the politics of the city it's free! We arrived on Friday afternoon and checked into our hostel (which was 1 block from the beach!) and left our stuff there and went to explore the city. It was interesting when we got there, because the city felt dead! It was during siesta, so almost all of the restaurants were closed. We explored the beach for a while, which was beautiful. I cannot wait to go back when ... read more

So last Tuesday, February 5th was the last night of a huge festival in Spain called Carnival. Barcelona doesn’t really celebrate it, so all of our teachers said that we should go to Sitges, a small town 30 minutes outside Barcelona to experience it. Carnival is a huge celebration lasting from the previous Thursday to the middle of the day the next Wednesday. It is similar to Mardi Gras, but without beads. I had class till 5:30, so once I got out of class, I went directly home to change and get ready to head out there. I had a cold, so I was really considering not going, but since it was a once in a lifetime opportunity, I felt I had to go. Lauren and I got dressed, and we didn’t have costumes, so we ... read more

I have no photos to do this experience justice. Being such a crazy night, I didnt bring my camera for the high chance of it getting pick-pocketed. However I was able to get a few before the night begun! In spain, they have this week long celebration called Carnaval. The weekends and last day are the best nights to celebrate and although Barcelona enjoys the festivities, no one does it like the town of Sitges (probably because the towns population is something like 45% gays, and we all know gays know how to have a good time!) So, some friends and I hopped on the train Saturday night, and it was so good I was doing it again on Tuesday! Tuesday was the biggest night because Ash Wednesday was the next day and everyone can indulge ... read more
