It is great to escape the City and get into the country to see the more natural side of Spain. I do find it very unique and wonderful and throw in the Mediterranean and it is very special indeed. Language…a mile a minute I would like to retract any complaint I have ever made about the French speaking too fast…the Spanish put them to shame! It is almost comical to listen to news casts or conversations and trhe spead with whcih they seem to converse. It truly is amazing! However, it is discouraging when trying to understand a new language to not hear any familiar words…when listening to the Spanish speak (Catalan or Spanish) it is disheartening to even try to learn the language when you hear the speed with which they speak! That is a ... read more

Saturday 25th July - Olot and the lower Pyrenees Somone upstairs had finally turned the heating down and so I swapped plans and set off on the bike around 10am. It was a deliciously cool 22C and even by midday had only reached mid-twenties. I felt like I had my own personal AC unit. Perfect conditions for riding a bike - especially without full luggage on a range of cols. What a mega f*cking day! First leg was to ride out to Sant Joan de Abasses - brilliant road, Col de Joubert I think and I yabadaba-dooed out loud in my helmet. Perfect tarmac, excellent bends and stunning views across the Parc de Volcans and further afield to the Pyrenees. The next col, Col de Santiago was possibly the twistiest road I have ridden, it flick-flacked ... read more

We had been watching the skydivers for a few days from the campsite, so decided to investigate. Rode our bikes over to the aerodrome. It was quite busy, lots of young dudes with jumpsuits and cool shades. We waited for the next plane to take off and settled on the small stadium seating area. We looked around and wondered where they would land. There seemed to be a large, blue airbed type thing over in the distance. Perhaps they landed there?! A guy with a walkie talkie seemed to be in contact with the plane. He heard us talking and as he was English he started up a conversation with the children. He said he would give us a two minute warning until landing time. We gazed up at the sky but still no sign of ... read more

Sorry it's taken so long for an update! On reflection the gite was very nice but just like being at home. Not really what I was looking for…. Onwards………….. Our next Wwoofing. We arrive at our next hosts, organic veg farmers. Again very rustic but what a great time. The children love riding on the back of the tractor. Marshall has taken to the chickens and now thinks we shouldn’t buy eggs from the supermarket, you can collect them yourself. Makes it quicker to the table and therefore to eat! We plant onions, pot on plant seeds and my highlight planting potatoes, on the back of a tractor in the rain. I was on a mission!. We all really enjoyed this stay, mainly because Brendon & Mandy are such lovely people. The French bingo night- one ... read more

Day Two of our Trip through Spain, Rowan and I visited Figueres where Salvador Dali was born, and later constructed a massive museum devoted to himself. Ego-maniac you say? I say artistic genius.... First we saw the park in the city and I loved the trees. The museum, comprised of two parts: The Art Museum and the Jewel collection. Both well worth the ticket price. He really was mad and creative and all those good things. Here are some of the paintings and sights that we beheld. As Dali said ¨Jewels are to be admired, not stowed away in some private collection¨(That was a complete misquote but he said something like that...) Enjoy friends :)... read more

"Every morning when I wake up, I experience an exquisite joy - the joy of being Salvador Dalí - and I ask myself in rapture: What wonderful things this Salvador Dalí is going to accomplish today?" - Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dalí'' We set off for a day trip to Figueres today. Figueres is famous for being the birthplace of the artist Salvador Dali and the main tourist attraction is the museum, designed by Dali himself, which houses a vast collection of his work. In addition to paintings from all decades of his career it also houses numerous sculptures, collages and tapestries as well as the bizarre living room which when viewed from above looks like the face of the American actress Mae West. The museum was, well, there is no other word for it... surreal. The ... read more

Guess what, being in a dorm with other people sucks, especially when the other people are French. Even though we were fast asleep in bed,the French kids thought it was entirely appropriate to continue their evening inside the dorm even at four in the morning. We would have reciprocated this morning when we got up at eight, but there was another couple still sleeping. We had breakfast and checked train times on the internet and then left to catch the train. We had no idea how long the journey should take so we settled in. It took slightly longer than we anticipated but we got to Figures after approximately an hour and forty. We followed signs straight from the station to the Dali museum which was our primary reason for visiting. The towns shops were empty ... read more

Yesterday we took a day trip up to Figueres to the place where Salvador Dali was born, where he died in 1989, and also where his museum was built in 1974. He was quite an intelligent, eccentric, and egotistical man(slash)aristic genious. He was quite proud and a bit arrogant about his accomplishments. I love this quote,by Salvador Dali himself... "Each morning when I awake, I experience again a supreme pleasure - that of being Salvador Dali." or another one..."I don't do drugs - I am drugs." Well looking at some of his art you would think he did take drugs though. But, he allowed much of the subconcious thoughts come through in his art. His biggest inspiration was Gala, his lover and later wife. She is in many of his paintings and he was quite obsessed ... read more

Teatre-Museu Dali, aka The Dali Theater-Museum is one of the most impressive museums I’ve been to. There’s so much to see, my eyes hurt after spending a few hours there. Dali personally designed, decorated and painted this museum to showcase his works (there are a few other artist there as well). There’s way to much to write it all down, so I’ll just share some pictures. Some of my favorites were the Mae West room, a living room of her face and there are some stairs you walk up to look through drapery, or her hair, to get the full picture. How creative is that?!! There’s also the Paradise room, which you view through a peep hole that is so beautiful with it’s bright green colors. Not much else to see at Figueres (cute town ... read more
