This morning we were able to pack up and much more easily than normal since we were the only ones in our two-bed room. Still, we didn't hit the road until after 7:30. On our way to the first real town of Villafranca del Bierzo, we passed a small property with some large, wild-looking sculptures. Check out the photo. When we got to Villafranca del Bierzo, we left the Camino a little bit to find a good place to eat breakfast. We ended up at the Cafeteria Compostella, where we split a slice of tortilla, and I introduced Raresh to churros. I knew he'd love them since I knew he loved chocolate and hot chocolate. We finished our breakfast, used the restroom, and reconnected with the Camino.
Just after leaving town, I spotted some weird colored bushes and had to take a photo. We stopped next in Pereje, or Perexe as spray painted on the signs, for a break, and along came Anakaren (sp), a Swedish lady that had stayed with us in the municipal albergue in Cacabelos. She had been having problems with her feet, so she had bought a nice pair of walking/hiking shoes. I told her about
my toe socks, and since she sounded interested, I loaned her one of my pair. I have 2 extra pair, so no biggy if I don't get them back.
After our break, the three of us continued on together. Sometime after Trabadelo, she decided she was holding us back, so we continued on, at a faster pace. Still, Raresh seems to be tiring out and slowing down sometime just before or after noon. I think he is not getting enough of some vitamin or mineral, so I am going to give him one of my water additive to try tomorrow.
We finally entered Vega del Valcarce around 2pm. The town is fairly small, but spread out along the single road. It seemed to take forever to reach the Municipal Albergue, and then we had walk up a very steep drive and some stairs to get to it. Nobody was there, and there was a sign telling us to find a bed and someone would show later to check us in. We went, upstairs of course, found a couple choice lower bunks (We were the only ones there!), go through our normal routine, then I went out to check
out the town while Raresh showered and rested. The town has 3 bars and 2 supermarket, but none of the bars serve anything for lunch, and dinner at 7pm. I returned to the albergue to tell Raresh, and we went out together to find something to eat at the supermarket. We ended up buying a frozen rice dish like paella and a container of vegetable soup. It was quite good, and inexpensive. We ate planning on going to one the bar/restaurants for a light dinner. Oh, and after lunch, we washed and dried most of our clothes.
Tomorrow we make the dreaded climb to O'Cibreiro, then on to Alto de Poyo.
