Does the body rule the mind or does the mind rule the body I dunno (Still Ill, The Smiths) Actually, I´m in Villafrana del Bierzo, but what´s 25 Kms between friends... So this morning I just wasn´t feeling it. The route out of Ponferrada was not well waymarked, my guidebook was no use, I´d had a crappy night´s sleep (BTW, what is the aversion that the Spanish have for fresh air. They look up a room tighter than an anally retentive buttcrack, consequently raising the room temperature to about 1,000 degrees and ensuring that oxygen deprivation in the middle of the night becomes a real possibility), and I was just changing into my cranky pants. This made me even worse, because I hadn´t felt like this for a couple of weeks - in fact I´d been ... read more

Stubborn, Determined or Dumb... They might all be the same word in my case. Molly would always say to me, "I really think it's amazing that despite all of your injuries and sickness you still are carrying on... I don't know if that means you are really stubborn or just a very determined person." I would have to say that I am a little bit of both, and also perhaps a little dumb. No, not dumb, just... well let's just stick with determined, it sounds better. Day 30: Acebo to Ponferrada Journal Entry-------------------- Monday April 30th, 2012 I was able to sleep in this morning bringing my total hours of sleep to 10! ...and I was still tired. Molly and I had a little breakfast at the bar and then the man that works there drove ... read more

We woke up and checked out with the incredibly bitchy receptionist, I know my Spanish sucks, now go to hell bitch. After a quick breakfast of some coffee and empanadas, we strode up to the main attraction in Ponferrada, the castle. This was pretty incredible. The castle was started in the 1200's, and was given to the Knights Templar in the 1300's. Ponferrada, and most of the cities we have gone to in fact, are along an important pilgrimage called the way of St. James. Since the Templars protected the pilgrims, they have a lot of Templar buildings in this region, and this is the granddaddy. The castle is surrounded by a moat and has a large drawbridge. It is fully intact and massive, the main wall had two tiers and the walls must have reached ... read more

After about 1 million hours of flying we arrived in Madrid, grabbed the rental car and hit the road. We got on the road about 7:30 am local time, and had a three hour drive to Ponferrada. Madrid is definitely in the "pampas". It was like driving through a slightly hillier version of Oklahoma, very intensively cultivated with corn, wheat, etc. Every town we drove by would have some sort of historic site, usually a large church or cathedral at the center of town and a few had good size castles. The temperature got pretty hot, nothing compared to Phoenix, I'd say mid 90's with some humidity. By the time we got to Ponferrada we were pretty exhausted. We began what would become a recurring theme of circling each town for about 30 minutes trying to ... read more

Thursday 30th September Damn, damn, damn!!! I have just lost all my notes from today until the 6th Oct....I can´t believe it!! I´m going to have to redo them all.... :( So here we go... Today I headed off on my own. Was very very teary in the morning, I´m really really sad to be leaving Armando, I got a lovely hug from the young american chick I´ve met a few times. Was really keen for a day totally on my own...not seeing anyone I knew. And that is what happened!! It was great!! I really enjoyed it. Time to start making the decisions I want to make and doing exactly what I want to do. The walk today was ok, went out to Villafranca... a very very pretty town. Had a drink, but was keen ... read more

Monday 27th September - continued... In Astorga. Armando and I went for Pizza, not bad, but terrible service. When we came out Guy and Johan were chatting outside in the plaza, so we sat with in the sun with them for a while. I mentioned to Johan (I´d been talking about it for days to Armando), that I was dying for a bath. He offered the use of his hotel room for an hour, so I could have a bath. WOW....who would think something so simple could get me so excited!! And also, another example of how, on the camino, you just seem to get everything you ask for. Anyway, I took him up on his offer, and had a bath. What a treat. I felt a bit like a princess, it was great just to ... read more
