Hi All- I´m just getting into a routine so far. It has almost been my first week here in Spain. I have downloaded my photos onto kodak.com for those who are in my circle. I promise to post here soon. Finding a room for a single traveler is difficult. Either you can stay in a hostel (alburgue juvenil), which I did for one night. They were full for the rest of the time, so if you go during the summer book ahead. I then walked from pension to pension which is listed as a hostel (inexpensive hotel) and found one for the going rate, score=own bathroom, cool! I have luck with CouchSurfing.com for my other cities that I will be traveling to, but no luck in Sevilla. Pobresita! Let me give you a run down thus ... read more

As we had to get up VERY early to catch our flights we were in Seville by 11. The hotel was opposite the Murillo gardens so we took advantage of that and spent plenty of time sitting in gardens under orange trees We had time for a Boccadillo Jamon before exploring Seville. The first place we visited was the very impressive Alcazar palaces. This is a collection of palaces that were built in stages over the last 11 centuries (although the majority of it was finished by the 15th). They are in the Moorish style, so they are filled with really amazing tiling and carving. I would really like some of those tiles! The gardens were also really nice and full of orange trees. After that it was time for a siesta (we had been up ... read more

pics of the bull fight to follow. disclaimer: there is no question this is a cruel outdated activity. but it happens so lets get past that and appreciate the spectacle that it is. this was the first bull fight of the season, there was a hum of anticipation and impatience. the bars were full around the stadium and we were tucked inside one of these eating tapas, drinking beer and talking about australian history and politics to our american friend Jay. no doubt he was facsinated... the time soon arrived when the crowd began to move. mickey and i didnt have tickets, after a morning of failed negotiations with various shifty fellows who were waiting to prey on gringos like us outside the stadium. so again, we walked to the stadium for one last attempt. we ... read more

Its about 6pm on Wednesday and I have to confess I am still recovering from yesterday. We arrived in Sevilla running on 4 hours of sleep after a late night with friends in Marbella and an early bus ride. WE checked into HOtel Abanico...one of the nicer places we´ve stayed in so far and discovered a HOT CHOCOLATE/COFFEE machine that is FREE from 10-10...I wish I could recreate our excitement at that moment...we are such dorks, but let me tell you when you are traveling the simple things really do make a HUGE DIFFERENCE! After discovering our gold mine, we showered (One of my new favorite things in the world is showering after arriving in a new city after a bus ride...so refreshing :)) and headed out to the streets of Sevilla. This week is Semana Santa ... read more

Marbella was a good relaxing time, we got lucky and meet some really great people. Sarah and I were walking along the boardwalk the first evening and ran into two old Spanish men who treated us to coffee and an evening of Spanish speaking and their thoughts. It was really wonderful to learn so much about how they felt about the EU, the weather and their grandchildren. We were going to get a dinner out of them as well, but had to go find Alyssa and Blair. The following evening we got in contact with someone we met in Granada, who was from Marbella and home for Santa Semana, and he introduced us to his friends who treated us to our first great Spanish dinner in a local restaurant after having a wonderful day under the ... read more

We just arrived in Sevilla this afternoon, which will be our last stop in Spain. From here the four of us are parting ways for a few days before we reunite in the French Riviera (Mel and I) and then in Italy (with Blair and Alyssa). Mel will be heading off to Annecy, a small town near Mount Blanc in France. Blair and Alyssa will be flying from Sevilla to Milan and I will be bussing west to Lagos, Portugal. So much has happened since I last wrote from Granada. Our last night in Granada we went to see a Flamenco show that my sister and I went to see last year when I was visiting her in Granada. It is at this theatre in Sacromonte (an old Arab quarter with all white buildings and small ... read more

Introduction Due to frustration with the American Embassy, i booked flights on Tuesday and flew to Seville on Thursday to spend a couple of days with my cousin Sophie before heading over to Morocco for 10 days. It was really nice to be able to just sticks and leave without any firm plans. I didn't take many pictures in Seville, partly because it preys on my pride to lower myself to the level of the fat American happy snapping tourists. I suppose that the other excuse I have is that I was enjoying wandering around so much that I didn't want to have to worry about what make a good photo, stopping, snapping and disturbing the easy flow of life in Southern Spain. Enough... Getting there I flew from Stansted and arrived in Seville a bit ... read more

here are a few pictures from an excursion with the ISA program in the middle of february. we spent a day and a half in sevilla, the capital of the region of andalucia, and an afternoon in córdoba. sevilla was beautiful, much sunnier than granada at the time. we visited the main sites - the cathedral with the famous tower, la giralda, which i believe they said is the third largest in europe. the alcazár palace, right next to the cathedral, which has been built/added to over many centuries. had a beer along the banks of the guadalquivir river in the triana quarter, walked around in the barrio (neighborhood) santa cruz. the cathedral was built on top of the original mosque, and it´s one of the most important arabic/hispanic buildings in spain. to the right is ... read more

So, although I´m having an enjoyable time, there are definitely some little things I miss dearly. For example: chai tea. Even the coffee shops don´t have it. I miss sitting in my dorm room drinking chai with my roomies and friends. If anyone wants to send me a care package with chai in it, I would be greatly indebted. Places to hang out. Just this afternoon a friend and I tried to find a place to work on some homework. The public library closes at 2pm on Saturdays, and all of the coffee shops were packed due to the pouring rain we´re currently experiencing. Salad dressing! Wow, do I miss ranch. Here we eat our salads with vinegar and salt. Ouch. I think it would be highly amusing if I actually came to like this idea, ... read more
