First day of school! We all talked about how we felt like freshmen again, lost in this huge school and speaking terrible Spanish. We'll get the hang of it soon, I hope. I went to 3 classes today, 2 of which I have decided not to take haha. One was not interesting and the other was too basic of a level of class for me. I'm going to try a few new classes tomorrow and then I think I'll have my schedule pretty much set for the rest of the week! It won't be official for another week or so though. All of my professors were very nice and not very intimidating, like I expected. I have alot of people from my program in my classes so we can study together which will be nice! This ... read more

Hi Everyone! My group of girls here and I have just been exploring Sevilla, it's a beautiful city! There are so many amazing plazas, cafes, and shopping here. We had our orientation at the University of Sevilla yesterday, and I start class on Monday. The first week of classes is just to go to a bunch of different classes that you're interested in to narrow it down to 4 or 5 that you want to take. We officially register for classes in 2 weeks. I will be taking 4 classes in Spanish to complete my major and then a photography class in English. I'm pretty nervous about school, it sounds pretty intimidating but I think being in spanish classes will help improve my communication with spaniards here. All of my classes are at the international school ... read more

Sevilla is 7 hours southwest of Madrid. We took a bus and left the hotel around 10 this morning, got to our families around 6:30pm. I met my family, a woman in her 50's name Paola, an older man in his upper 50's named Jose, a 14 year old boy named Sergio, and a 10 year old girl name Claudia. We had to roll our luggage a few blocks and I ran straight into a pole when I was talking with my host mom. It was pretty embarrassing but it seems to be happening a lot on this trip... When we first came to the house the family showed us around and let us unpack in our room for a while. Its pretty small, but bigger than the UW dorms in Madison. We have a large ... read more

This past weekend I went on an awesome two-day excursion with friends from the program: Sarah, Corey, and Jessica. I left my house by taxi at 6 AM on Saturday (it's not safe to walk alone at that time) and met up at Alcala's train station. We headed into Madrid to the main station and caught our AVE bullet train to Sevilla. The next morning we left early for Córdoba, in between Sevilla and Madrid. We had tons of fun even though the temperature was about 106° the whole time! Here are some of the highlights of the weekend: Sevilla Since my boyfriend said this was his favorite place in Spain, I knew I had to see it. When Sarah, Jessica, Corey, and I were trying to get to the center of town from the train ... read more

I really should have written these up over the weekend, but getting online is such a hassle (I don't have wifi at the apartment & don't want to carry my laptop to some cafe). Besides, the first week was full of activities and kinda flew by. I don't really know how to summarize it, but here we go: Monday, June 6th: After a quick breakfast, I rushed to the school, where everyone took a written & oral test to decide what level we needed to be on. It wasn't a horrible test, but they make me so nervous! Speaking, especially, is such a nightmare. You want to speak quickly because no one wants to sound like the idiot that pauses after every three words and says, "Uh... uh..." In the end, you make all these little ... read more

Seville, the capital of our favourite spanish region, Andalucia, is famous for two things - its bitter oranges that the British favour for marmalade and the week long Easter festivities of Semana Santa. The famed orange trees are all around us, filling the air with a fabulous scent. With our packs on our backs we weave our way through the bustling crowds in search of our hostel. It’s pouring down with rain and having already caught two buses (the second of which takes us in completely the wrong direction) and a tram, we’re relieved when we find it tucked in behind a grand church in full Holy Week preparations. Men (and presumably women) dressed in pointed hoods and long cloaked gowns reminiscent of the KKK are among the crowds and a group of bearers (having completed ... read more

Trzy wieczory flamenco pod rzad. I kazdy inny. We wtorek bylam w barze Carboneria, niby kultowym. Flamenco przyciaga do Sevilli ... read more

Dlaczego tu jestem? Bo chcialam zobaczyc Andaluzje i taniej bylo sie dostac do Sevilli, niz do innego miasta. I loty byly o lepszych godzinach. Wszystko w promieniach zachodzacego slonca. A potem okazalo sie, ze ... read more
