I wish time wasn’t passing so quickly! I feel like just when we’re finally starting to get to know the city, the things to do and finding more places to explore…
This morning was a tonto day en escuela; ‘nuff said. PM clase was short because of Sevillanas, but we had an interesting discussion regarding the Catholic Church and its significance in Spain. Just because you don’t go to Church, it doesn’t mean you’re not a Catholic and just because you go to Church doesn’t mean you are one. While Spain is still predominantly Catholic, I think it may be more culturally so than religiously so. The people here can apparently still opt to have their taxes put towards the Catholic Church. Violation of Church vs. State? What do YOU think?
Sevillanas was a lot of fun once again though it really is awfully hard to remember all the steps! I want to record them so I don’t forget them. I could keep up ok but I would love to be able to get everything coordinated and really do the dance!! I watched Carmen like a hawk so I could retain as much as possible. Today we learned part
"Bad English"
It's funny that the shirts are translated SO poorly here...I had to go home with one. 3 and part 4 of the dance. I partnered with Dale again and Paco Loco. I love the super fast music best…I’m pretty sure the group is not in accordance. Andrea was my photographer as I wanted to dance and not take pics! Just took a few and a couple vids later on. After the class was over, I spoke to Carmen for a little while. She teaches music to all grades at the private Catholic School we attend on Tues/Thurs and for the cooking and Sevillanas classes. I think she said she has 600+ students and there are some thousands that attend the school. I can’t remember exactly how many but it was impressive. She’s been teaching music there for 4 years and she’s just a couple years younger than me. She said her academic interest is in anthropology and she is a singer and dancer. Just in case anyone cares about the life and times of Carmen the dance instructor. :P
Tapas tonight…I’m glad I’m finally getting some tapas time in! I went out with one of the profs and her friend and if I try to spell his name, I might accidentally say flip flop, so
I’ll wait til I have the photo for later… It was a bit of a change as I was speaking to him in English so he could practice his English as he’s taking exams next week. I really enjoy speaking Spanish here, but my cabeza needed a little break tonight. I find it very interesting speaking to natives more familiarly because I learn a lot about the culture…and lots of new frases como, “Ponerse,” which is used to tell people to stand still when you’re taking a photo…in lieu of “Wait” in ingles.
Cutting myself off so that I can go finish my tarea and get some shut eye. Tomorrow we go to Carmona straight from school.
