We wake late. Well no, actually we woke early and turned back over!
We only have two days in Malaga so we had better get a move on! The hotel has a very nice buffet breakfast and we are hungry so we are another hour on before we are ready.
We emerge on to the deserted Sunday street outside our hotel. The heat hits us like a blast. We thought it would be cooler here by now? We are walking to the Centro Histórico, it’s about half an hour on foot. We start off by the harbour and then head inland.
We stumble across a modern art gallery. It looks interesting so we go inside. It’s quite a good collection and all blissfully air con so it’s a pleasant interlude.
Now to Malaga centre. It’s a Sunday hence, there are church services on this morning so the cathedral is closed to sightseers.
Ian takes us to the park. It’s a shaded place to take a break on a park bench…until I see a huge rat scuttling across the path that us! Ugh, I’ve just seen a rat I tell Ian. Yes, he’s seen several, he wasn’t
going to tell me but since I know, there’s one sitting under the rubbish bin to my left. Eek, I’m not staying here then! We scuttle off as fast as the rats!
It’s funny…give those rats a bushy tail and they would be squirrels, then I would not detest them and they would not be the stuff of nightmares. The brothers Grimm and especially the pied piper of Hameln have a lot to answer for…!
We make our way to the Roman amphitheatre and the Alcazabar. Ian reports that it’s open but that it’s free entry after 2pm. Really? Sounds odd but we’ll return later then! We set off to explore the old town. It’s pretty packed with tour groups, most on foot but some on segways.
We find another shady square and rest a while there. Here we meet a very nice lady from Cumbria. She has been at the coast but now in the city for a few days. Like us, she is feeling the heat and found airport travel harder than she used to…next year she’s going to holiday in Wales instead! It’s comforting to know I’m not the only one flying, increasingly stressful!
Not exactly the idea of taking a holiday! I must be getting old! She is in her way to the castle…we tell her it’s free in just over an hour if she can wait! :-)
So now for another wander down the narrow old town and another stop to indulge in huge ice creams. Strawberry cheesecake and Kit Kat flavours for me. Mint and Oreos for Ian.
It’s ten to two and we’re waiting around with all the other skinflints for the free entry period to the alcazabar. A voice calls out hello, it’s the lady we met earlier with her partner. We squeeze up on the bench and have another chat. Now they are off to lunch whilst we brave the heat of the monument. I think they made the better choice as it’s open till 8pm but we want to get an early night.
The Alcazaba is extensive. An uphill walk along bricked pathways with plenty of photo opportunity stops along the way. We have reached, what we think us the top, but we can see people much higher up in the distance. But where is the path? Honestly we cannot see it and we
are bushed so we admit defeat and return to the bottom of the hill.
Time for food. We find ab outside table at a restaurant. It’s still very hot even though it’s now 4pm. We call the waiter and order our food. He tells me my Spanish is better than his English…hmmm, no English then?
Happy anniversary says Ian. Oops I had forgotten. Twenty three years! Good job we don’t much bother about these things.
Now to return to the hotel. Thirty minutes plus a supermarket stop to pick up some water. Baggy me first for the shower!
