We had a kind of scavenger hunt today. Veronica split us into groups and gave each of the groups something to find and get information about. All the things had to do with stuff to do in Granada, like where the theaters are, where you can take flamenco or salsa classes, or ours, find the office of tourism and get information on bus schedules for the coast and skiing, and schedules for monuments in Granada. Ours ended up being really easy because a girl in our group walked by the office on the way home every day, so we knew where it was. Courtney’s group had a harder time. They had to find the two theaters in Granada. One was up near the Alhambra and the other was on the other side of town. They didn’t get back for another hour and a half, and I was done in twenty minutes.
This little excursion made me realize that I need to get lost in the city. I know my route from home to school perfectly, but beyond that, I’m still pretty lost. After we get back from Morocco I’m going to take a day and just explore. It’s been a
Plaza of the Birds
We walk through this every day to the Centro and it is always full of birds. It's a little gross because there is bird poop all over the ground and it smells. Sometimes you can hear the poop hitting the ground, like rain. little hard making connections with people here. I’ve become friends with Courtney and I knew Emma before coming, but I haven’t found a spot with the group. It’s so different from China since there are so many of us. Everyone has already moved into ‘their’ groups. I find myself wishing Carey, Brittany, Justin, and the rest were here with me. The eight of us were so close in China; it was so easy to make plans and go out and do things together. Spain is a whole different game. Another difficulty is that a lot of people came here for a party. They want to go out every night to the bars and discotecas, so I haven’t really meshed with most of them because I don’t want to do that all the time. Since I was so lucky with the people in China, it’s harder to lower my expectations for Spain.
Not all is so bad though. Instead of doing an internship or service learning, I decided to find some extra classes to take like flamenco, salsa, or Spanish cooking. Hopefully with these I can meet more people outside of our program, and maybe make some Spanish friends. For
the scavenger hunt, one group was finding out about classes that are available to students, so I can get started with that on Wednesday when they present to the class.
The first week of February, I don’t have class, so I plan on taking advantage of that and traveling. I have five days, so I decided on Vienna. It’s a city that I want to see, but not for a weekend. That would just be too rushed and stressful. This way, I have two days for traveling and three whole days for sightseeing. I spent several hours looking up information on the places to see there, hostels, and plane tickets. I’ve even figured out a tentative schedule. For the first day, they have Hop on, Hop off bus tours that take you around the city. It might sound kind of lame and “touristy”, but I guess I am a tourist, and I figure that’s the best way to see as much of the city in the short time that I have. The next day would be for seeing all the museums and monuments like the Opera House, Innenstadt (city center), St. Stephen’s Cathedral, and the catacombs at Peterskirche. The
third day we could go shopping. Even more important though, I wanted to see the Vienna Riding School with the Lipizzaner stallions. I have seen shows with these horses, seen pictures, and read books about it, but it would be so amazing to be able to see the real thing. I asked some people in my class, and they said they were interested, so hopefully tomorrow I can start setting everything up! This is the longest break we have until spring break, so I want to take advantage of it.
