Enroute Logarska Dolina - Breg, Brda
Got up early and packed before breakfast.
Breakfast was as normal. I managed to ask whether I could buy some elodec and how much, somehow I managed to purchase one at 600gm and a 1.5kg, they are vacuum packed and frozen, so I’m hoping they’ll make it back to UK. I’ll have to find somewhere cool to store them whilst further south.
After saying our farewell’s, we headed towards Austria and after a really exciting uphill climb, Jeremy Clarkson would have been proud, we re-entered Slovenia and headed downhill towards Kranj and then Bled.
We put in the SatNav not to go on motorways or toll roads, as you now have to buy a Vignette to travel on the major motorways in Slovenia. The outcome was to take us through lots of lovely small villages’ enroute.
Bled arrived and though very picturesque, there were lots of people and nowhere really to park, so we continued on to Lake Bohinj, in the heart of the Triglav National Park.
Lake Bohinj and the road that leads to it are beautiful. The lake reflects all the surrounding mountains and today it was particularly still and the views
were truly stunning.
After coffee, we set of towards Tolmin, which is the other side of the Triglav Mountains, with the intention of then taking the main road down the Soča Valley to the Brda Hills and Breg.
The road across to Tolmin was the most exciting we had been on so far. There were so many switch backs, steep hills and valleys, the 20 or so miles took about an hour and a half.
Just before Tolmin, we rest the SatNav to take us to Breg. Big mistake, I had forgotten to take cancel the no motorway section and probably the most important, we needed to get to Tolmin before any resetting.
The outcome was that we saw the Soča River, an amazing aquamarine blue, but also we were directed into, well, nowhere.
Trusting that all would be well, we headed off. The trip from Bohinj was exciting, this was downright hair raising. The road was very narrow, they hadn’t heard of crash barriers, and the drop on occasion would make you go white (forget grey, it was that bad). Interestingly, as we continued our journey, there were lots of ‘holes’ in the land, about 50m wide and 20m deep. On occasions the road would go right across them and on others around. We think. As were in limestone country, that they could be sunken caverns, many years ago, rather than any form of human intervention. This valley and the Soča, were involved heavily during WW1, but there were too many to have been, say, gun emplacements.
Two hours later we arrived near Nova Gorica, a trip which would have taken 40 min’s via the main road!
Anyway, all should be well now as we headed towards the Brda Hills. We went into Italy and out again no less than three times before we reached our destination. The scenery though is great, lots of small hill top villages with vineyards on all the slopes. They have just started to gather in the harvest, so there were lots of little tractor and trailers trundling of to the centralised collecting station.
After a few false starts, we arrived at Breg, however they had not had the reservation confirmed by the Tourist Agency and they were fully booked tonight! I don’t totally believe them however as I had sent an e-mail myself only three weeks ago to confirm that we would be arriving.
Anyway they’re very nice and their English is good, and they have arranged for us to stay in an Italian Vineyard about 4.5k back down the hill! We can come back tomorrow with no problems and also eat there tonight.
So tonight we are staying in Venica & Venica in Dolegna del Collio. They are very nice rooms, and we have been made welcome so all is not lost. After today’s trip here, it has been rounded of just nicely!
When we set off a week ago we wanted to go on an adventure, this has been just that, full of surprises and challenges, but great fun for all that.
