Woke up at 7am showered, had breakfast and left Ves's house at 8am. When I got to the tram almost immediately there was tram No. 7 to the main bus station. Fortunately it was one of the old trams that you can buy a ticket from the driver. People as usual do look at you because clearly I don't look like one of them. Got to the bus station at 0840. The bus leaves Zagreb at 0900 and it takes 6 hours. I was hoping to find an internet cafe to download and print Natasa's invitation letter but had no luck with that. The bus left sharp on time. The weather is absolutely fantastic not cold and sunny blue skies. Scenary enroute to Belgrade was very dry aleast on the Croatia side. After awhile the tall ... read more

Half ten felt like a fantastic sleep in until we checked the guidebook and found out that the museum we wanted to visit shut at two. We asked a guy working at the hostel how to get there and he didn't really know so we stood and waited at a bus stop for awhile until we figured we wouldn't have enough time there. Our plans had evolved mainly around the museum so we didn't really know what to do. We began by walking up to the centre and it felt a lot more lively than yesterday. There was a stage errected with a few bands playing which we think was to promote the prevention of aids. We noticed a crowd of people around a kiosk in the middle of the street, we went over to have ... read more

We arrived in Belgrade at pretty much six in the morning. The journey was terrible and worsened by the fact that what was a dribbly nose turned into a full blown cold. We had the name of a hostel written down called New Morning hostel which said on the website that it had a twenty four hour reception. We stood outside the main entrance knocking and ringing the bell for about half an hour until we gave in. Our next choice was over the other side of the town so we walked through the deserted centre to get there. Lonely Planet quoted prices that were not only affordable, but cheap. That wasn't the case inside the hotel Royal, we couldn't afford anything, even when he reduced the price for us. We didn't have a backup written ... read more

8:00am So, here we were in Serbia. Abruptly awoken by banging on the door to our cabin to inform us to get of the train we were the last stop. Jolted from sleep and thwo outside, I was very groggy, very freezing, and I realized I had to pee like nobody's buiness After we said goodbye to our friend I felt like we were running around like chickens with our heads cut off. I needed the toilet. We followed the WC signs which led to ourdoor Hickory Run-like toilets. I didn't like them in Pennsylvania...i doubt I'd like it in the Winter in Eastern Europe. Plus you had to pay and we didn't have this currency. So we go into the ticket office to buy tickets and they don't accept credit cards. We look for a ... read more

We finally extricated ourselves from Sarajevo ... yay! Last night I had the worst sleep ever. I couldn’t swallow because my glands were so swollen, I had heartburn, and I couldn’t stop coughing. I knew I was keeping Mike away and tried to do anything I could to stop: I ended up sitting upright, propped up with a pillow against the wall, sucking on a candy cane hoping the mint would soothe my throat. I must’ve been quite a sight! We woke up at 6:45 this morning (brutal) and caught a bus to Nis, and then planned to go to Sofia from there. It ended up being a bus ride from Hell that never ended: 7 hours passed, then 8 hours, 9, 10 ... 11 HOURS LATER we arrived in Nis, and we weren’t too happy ... read more

It really blows my mind to think that it’s only been one week since I left Pula! Seems like forever ago! So, last night turned out to be pretty fun. Mike and I walked around for two hours trying to find the Bohemian Quarter (Skadarska Street), walking in circles the entire time and never finding it, and finally settled on pizza slices down the street from the hostel. (Travelling with Mike might be a bad idea, actually, because he doesn’t place much importance on eating well!) After dinner, we had a couple of drinks at a bar, got delicious ice cream, then went back to the hostel and watched “Legally Blonde”. I know we should be taking advantage of Belgrade’s supposedly excellent nightlife, but it seems to be very hidden because I haven’t seen any places ... read more

Just had to stop and write a quick entry while I sit in front of the biggest and most incredible church I’ve ever seen - the St. Sava Orthodox Cathedral. I always wanted to see the Taj Mahal; now I don’t know if it’s necessary! This thing totally blew my mind. It’s white with green domes and gold crosses, very simple but astoundingly huge. It’s under construction so it’s basically empty inside, with dark, cold stone (it’s freezing inside). But there’s music playing and people praying and bowing and lighting candles amid the scaffolding. Wow! So, once again, everything changed in a matter of hours last night. I went out to dinner and had a delicious meal (chicken and broccoli tagliatelle), then considered staying out for one more drink but wasn’t really in the mood ... read more

Here I am, in Serbia, and I seem to recall laughing uproariously with Rachelle about the idea of travelling to Serbia (or was it Bulgaria... either way, Serbia: who’d have guessed it?). This morning I missed breakfast, so I bought a burek sir for the road (greasy-as). The bus from Vukovar to Belgrade was supposed to come at 10:45 but it didn’t arrive until 11:15; I was afraid I’d pulled another Slavonski Brod! Why is it that the towns I enjoy the least are the ones that give me so much trouble leaving? Maybe it’s a sign that I haven’t stayed long enough to understand them. Or maybe my first impressions of them were right, and they’re annoying bastards. Either way, I was happy when it arrived, even though it meant I was leaving Croatia, which ... read more

Journey and Arrival I wokeup in the train with an old Serbian couple in my car, and sleep wasn't coming back. The old lady seemed releived that I was alive and promptly forced me to eat lots of food, literally shoving it into my face. It was hard to complain, it's quite nice :D The highlight of this train journey was unquestionably pasing through Nis. The train passes along at the equivalent height level of a 2nd storey building across an ad-hoc Serbian city that's not so far removed from what one imagines of the favelas of South America, with buildings placed almost randomly and squadrons of old ladies which bags across their backs, carrying items across the town. Only 2 and a half hours late, we arrive in Belgrade, not quite as bad as Marija's ... read more
