Adventures in Serbia Europe » Serbia » Belgrade By Dave090July 19th 2007David WeinsteinSo I have been in Belgrade for two days now and the first thing that comes to mind is the heat. Also, it is not as cheap as we expected. It is however, a very charming city with a lot of friendly people and nice sites. I would highly recommend it if you are in the area. I do not have time to type much but just know I am having a great time. We saw the fort, a few cool churches, walked through some great streets and experienced the great night life on the rivers. Till next time....bye... read more

The bus from Sofia to Belgrade took a lot longer than expected. The border alone took an hour because apparently, the border patrol on the Bulgarian and Serbian sides were too busy having coffee and cigarettes to immediately get to stamping our passports. When we made an unexpected stop in Nis to switch busses, I was lucky enough to meet a Macedonian girl who spoke English (no one else on the bus spoke that, German or Spanish, so I would have been really out of luck) and showed me where to switch in our tickets, where the new bus was, and covered the 10 dinar fee to "check" luggage onto the new bus (that's a new one) as I didn't have any Serbian money on me yet. She told me some really interesting stories about ... read more

Well the end of one portion of my traveling has come to a close. Today I said goodbye to the entire Weinstein clan. We had a nice time together in the Greek Isles. Crete seems like a great place but unfortunately, partly due to weather and planning, I just did not get to see a lot of it. It was nice walking through the main city of Heraklion with the family though. Today I flew from Crete to Athens with Debra, then I said goodbye to my travel partner/sister and flew on Jat Airline (the Yugoslavian airway) to Belgrade. The flight was pretty good, and I slept for most of it. Once there, I took a taxi to a hostel and met my friend Alex...my new travel partner. You can check out his travel blog ... read more

On my bus ride to Novi Sad I met a lovely girl Jelana who told me all about living in Serbia, they dont make much money there, but the cost of living is low so actually they are generally quite well off. We met up with her boyfriend Nemanja for a beer and a chat, they really are a friendly people and very hospitible and enjoy having guests. We ended up going out for dinner then having more beers with two of his friends Deva and "Coma" before hitting up the Rakia shots (plum brandy - deadly!) Thanks guys! By this stage I was only 4 hours late to meet Heloise at the campsite but they took me in a taxi to the camp ground where somehow I was able to pitch the tent in ... read more

Around June time last year I can remember telling people that I was about to go to EXIT Festival in Serbia. The typical reaction was “you are going where?” After telling them the line up their interest perked up a little but few people were envious. This year the reaction was completely different. They were either very jealous or they were coming too. Despite being seven years old it took us in Britain a while to notice this festival but that all changed this year. And that wasn’t necessarily for the best. In the days of so many commercial festivals, started by big companies out to make some money, it is fulfilling to come to a festival like EXIT that was set up with the intention of making the world a better place. The first EXIT ... read more

So today, took a day trip to the 2nd largest city in this country, Novi Sad. It was further than I thought!. On the bus, along the way you can see the farms, the lowlands....beautiful. At some point you can also see garbage dumps though..haaa! Got there and it was so different from Belgrade!....more laid back. However, full of EXIT people.....which made it....umm....I just didnt like it with all of them around. I think I saw the English that got me drunk that night! " Anyways, walking around seeing the festival goers..they filled all the cafes!..made me wanna leave that city...wrong choice...should've went to Topola instead! Was actually plannign to go, but was too tired this morning and missed the bus.... Anyways, The city itself was pretty nice. All day, walked around the city...looked at ... read more

Flying old skooly I had a cheap flight with JAT airlines, I had manually printed tickets that I had to collect, the plane was old and rickety, but with tonnes of leg room and free food! As soon as I hopped off the plane it was like a heat wave, beautiful! Just what I needed to escape the most abysmal summer in London that anyone can remember. Headed straight to my hostel for a cool beer and a chat with some locals, I ended up going out that night with them for a few drinks and a swim at a man made lake. The girls here really know how to look after themselves and its true what they say about the eastern europeans, some absolute stunners to be seen! I only really had one day ... read more

Didn't expect Belgrade to be this....developed! I mean, the shops and everything!...The standard of living is still kind of low...many street stalls and cheap food...but I like the vibe so far!..seems like a pretty nice city! I took the night train here and MY GOODNESS...it was bad. it was a train full of people going to EXIT festivals...which means...smokers, drinkers, and exciting people. The two guys in my cabin were just going in and out smoking and rolling..weeed? dunno..I was too sleepy to even look. People in other cabins were screaming and stuff... got through 4 passport checks..and I think I got a stamp from Croatia.....dunno why that is. and also 3 ticket checks.......-___-" Didn't get much sleep in the end...-o- Got to Belgrade finally!!! went to this hostel I read about online that was good ... read more

Well my ride to Belgrade wasn't pretty. It was a night bus, which was never going to be that good, but I was stuck next to the worst person possible. The person you never want to be stuck next to on a plane or a bus. That's right. The fat guy. And what's worse, he moved around every few minutes! So I got into Belgrade exhausted, but managed to find my hostel and chucked my backpack there and headed out to see what there was to see. First stop was a bakery for some breakfast (and some sugar), and then I headed to the Ancient Fortress and saw the remains of that, before taking a nana nap in the park. Feeling a bit refreshed, I headed round town and checked out the National Museum and ... read more
