Day 5: Stayed in the apartment most of the day. Read up on some Irish history, checked emails, posted some photos, etc. About 4 pm, Dejan and I got some burek and then I caught a bus to downtown Belgrade to meet up with Ivan (he works downtown). We then walked to Knez Mihailova (a pedestrian street and very busy on the first nice, sunny day of the year) and toured around Kalemegdan (a massive fort overlooking where the Sava and Danube rivers meet... built around the 14th century). Belgrade is definitely more modernized than when I was here last. There are ATMs everywhere (had trouble finding *one* the last time I was here), nice stores that you would see in Western malls, and so forth. Oh, and the government enforcing laws, such as that all ... read more

Day 3: This time I woke up at 5 am on the train. And this time, I had the whole room to myself. During the night I was awakened by the border patrol for passport checks going into Hungary, leaving Hungary, and entering Serbia. Ivan met me at the train station and we took a taxi to his apartment in Belgrade. The taxi driver knew right away that I was a foreigner and that Ivan was Serb. After saying something, he correctly guessed that I am from the U.S. He then asks if I am there for Slobodan Milosevic's funeral. Well... I knew he had died, but when I left the U.S. the decision had not been made where to bury him. At that moment, I think an expletive was my first thought. In brief, there ... read more

Despues ... read more

2 November We had to make a quick decision in Hungary on the best way of exploring the Balkans. We have learned very quickly that it is not possible to explore East Europe if you are in a big hurry to get somewhere. While we are accustomed to taking trains throughout Western Europe, the very long and stuffy bus ride is the means of getting around without a car in the East. We even got some funny looks in Budapest when we asked about getting down to Bosnia. Maps are so deceiving--it is only a few inches on the map after all! We opted to go to Belgrade first and those "few inches" on the map became a seven hour bus ride. We actually came to enjoy this experience, however. For the entire ride the bus ... read more

Had my first positive experience with a dog here in Europe, back in Dubrovnic we were walking but from some club and it came running up to me with its tail wagging and i patted it for a long time and that s about it really. I finished another book, The Girl with a Pearl Earing. Solid book. Made me cry a little bit. Bought Angels and Demons here in Belgrade yesterday. A bit scared to start it because I know that that will mean three days of sitting inside and reading. I can't believe it is October already, next month I will be back in my homeland, crazy! Let me see, so after the island of Korcula we went to Dubrovnic. What an enchanting, incredible town. Best part about getting there was the 4 hour ... read more

I have to be fair although it’s nowhere near as fun. I am only here for one day, not very much time to shape a conclusion of the city. Moreover, it is Sunday. As with most European cities, only the minimum of shops is open. As it is midsummer, half the city is in Budva, either burning itself on an uncomfortable and dirty beach or recovering from their hangovers from the night before. It is practically the sole destination promoted in every travel agency’s front window. A few Serbs may have accidentally gone to Turkey. But they were not paying attention and missed the special week’s offer for hotel and entertainment on the Montenegrin coast. If Belgrade were any more lifeless, everyone remaining in this very ordinary metropolis would be driving around in hearses. Extremely ordinary ... read more

So my balkan trip by train started and i had to sit for almost 3 hours in a train! i slept all the way to Croatia and woke up in the morning just right after the border already in Serbia. The train was heading for Belgrade where i would have to change trains for my train to Skopje in Macedonia. Since i was in the train i enjoyed the views and took pictures, so no long story here, just pictures of what i would see along the way! The weather in serbia was still a bit bad but got better along the way and the more south we got.... read more

Hurray! I'm back on the road again. Sara (my girlfriend) and I had hoped to go to Central America for the summer. But alas due to some bad planning, some bad luck, and changes in the university year dates, we couldn't get reasonably priced tickets. So we decided to go to Bulgaria for a month. Trains from Budapest to Sophia, the capital of Bulgaria, run twice a day and go one of two routes, via Romania, or via Serbia. The Serbian route was cheaper ($90 US return) and quicker acording to the internet (Hungarian Railways) so we took that route. After a long slow journey from Budapest to Belgrade, overnight in the sitting carriage we arrived in Belgrade. Our timetable had also indicated that arriving in the morning would give us a 2 hour stopover and ... read more

Me interesaba ... read more
