We debated to the very end whether or not it was a good idea to throw in one more day in Belgrade, but at least it gave us a day of rest and it allowed us to get some laundry done, clean up Milos' place, buy a sketch of Belgrade, and explore what would not normally be explored since Belgrade is a solid two-day type of place. Final Tourist Spots These were all starting to look the same at this point, but since we had a whole day ahead of us, we felt it would be much more satisfactory if we visited at least a couple more tourist hotspots. St. Mark's is quite large but ultimately it looks like most of the other Orthodox churches we have seen and the Serbian Assembly fell into that same ... read more

A dreary day in more ways than one . . . We went to bed at midnight last night after what was a long night (relative to our day) and woke up about 9AM to a dreary gray sky and rain outside. On the one hand we need a break, but on the second I am feeling better. We will go out in a couple of hours and visit the Citadel and maybe go do some shopping for Jennifer who wants something from the many clothing shops on Kneza Mihailova. Despite the dreary day, I'd say Belgrade and the Serbs are still our favorite place and people so far. Italian in Belgrade We had lunch at Duomo, a great Italian place in the "Silicone Valley" street - great because of the food, service, and atmosphere. I ... read more

The Crazy Train Jumper Last night was the roughest train ride yet in the couchette, our cabin mates were friendly enough but their habits and monopolization of the breathable air (cigarette smoke, foot smell, and body odor) and space (everyone else in the car was settled in and twenty minutes later our babushkas were still shuffling around arranging their luggage and beds). Our cabin mates were a group of four - the two ladies barely said anything to us but were clearly upset we had the bottom bunks; the two guy were okay except that they both smelled, one like a** and the other like stank feet. Stinky feet kept striking up conversations with us in whatever language he was speaking to the point where we stopped telling him we didn't speak his language and would ... read more

It turned out that there were only two trains each day which run from Budapest into Belgrade in neighbouring Serbia. One that goes over night and one that goes during the day. As we had alraedy booked our accommodation we were stuck with the day train and it meant that we had to skip our planned brief stop in Novi Sad. We also had difficulty changing money into Serbian currency for the trip with the exchange place at the station not stocking it. Then when we arrived in Belgrade we came across the first ATM that didnt accept Rosss Maestro card. Luckily Kerries Visa card was accepted. One other problem awaiting us in Belgrade was that not only did we not understand the Serbian language but we could also not attempt to pronounce it as everything ... read more

Hi Everybody! Yesterday, we took a train ride from Sofia, Bulgaria to Belgrade, Serbia. We covered 200 miles in 11 hours on a train that had no air-conditioning. We bought the best available first class tickets which meant that we had white satin covers on our headrests. We did have assigned seats but no one seemed to pay attention to that. The train ride was long and hot! The good part was that we made a couple of excellent friends. One was a University student returning home to Belgrade from a 45 day trip to the Middle East. His name was Miklos, and he was extremely helpful. We thoroughly enjoyed his company. We met Miklos before we boarded the train. Our cabin mates were Serbians and consisted of Lily, the mother her daughter, Natasha age 12 ... read more

Adventures in Serbia Europe » Serbia » Belgrade By Dave090July 19th 2007David WeinsteinSo I have been in Belgrade for two days now and the first thing that comes to mind is the heat. Also, it is not as cheap as we expected. It is however, a very charming city with a lot of friendly people and nice sites. I would highly recommend it if you are in the area. I do not have time to type much but just know I am having a great time. We saw the fort, a few cool churches, walked through some great streets and experienced the great night life on the rivers. Till next time....bye... read more

The bus from Sofia to Belgrade took a lot longer than expected. The border alone took an hour because apparently, the border patrol on the Bulgarian and Serbian sides were too busy having coffee and cigarettes to immediately get to stamping our passports. When we made an unexpected stop in Nis to switch busses, I was lucky enough to meet a Macedonian girl who spoke English (no one else on the bus spoke that, German or Spanish, so I would have been really out of luck) and showed me where to switch in our tickets, where the new bus was, and covered the 10 dinar fee to "check" luggage onto the new bus (that's a new one) as I didn't have any Serbian money on me yet. She told me some really interesting stories about ... read more

Well the end of one portion of my traveling has come to a close. Today I said goodbye to the entire Weinstein clan. We had a nice time together in the Greek Isles. Crete seems like a great place but unfortunately, partly due to weather and planning, I just did not get to see a lot of it. It was nice walking through the main city of Heraklion with the family though. Today I flew from Crete to Athens with Debra, then I said goodbye to my travel partner/sister and flew on Jat Airline (the Yugoslavian airway) to Belgrade. The flight was pretty good, and I slept for most of it. Once there, I took a taxi to a hostel and met my friend Alex...my new travel partner. You can check out his travel blog ... read more
