After a short (in the grand scheme of things) and uneventful train journey from Irkutsk to Ulan Ude we arrived at our homestay in the early moning. We were staying with a woman called Lera in another Soviet apartment block. After crashing for a few hours we had breakfast. It turns out that our house mother was a gourmet chef in a previous life and for the first time ever we enjoyed our breakfast in Russia. After breakfast we were collected by our driver Andre (Also a political pundit) and our guide, Sveta, and whisked away to a Buddhist monastery outside the city of Ulan Ude. We had a brief tour of the tiny monastery that is still being rebuit. (after the Communist era). We then went for a tradtional Buryati lunch in a small Ger ... read more

Day 106, 14th September Berezovka - Ujar - Borodino PLEASE NOTE: This travel journal is a “MEMORABLOG”, therefore, it took place 5 years ago exactly to the date. It is being typed word for word from the handwritten journals of Bikepacker, Andy Ganner. So, basically, we can’t be met on the road somewhere as some people have thought, and some of the places we stayed will no longer exist, and the visa beauracracy we went through may have vanished - or, got worse! Still, enjoy the stories - and be inspired. Cycling today was the hardest yet. There was a headwind, it was freezing cold, and it rained on and off all day. This, and all the hills, made very miserable going. So many cars and trucks tooted at us, the drivers smiling and waving. They ... read more

So i'm in a hospital, on an island, in the middle of the largest lake in the world, in siberia.. The tv's on in the corner of the surgery, my translator swears he's with the KGB, & the doctor is asking me if it's true that we send busloads of Kiwi girls out into the country to marry farmers. 'Didn't r-e-a-l-l-y expect to be here. We've been in Russia for just over a week now, 20 days until we kicked out once and for all! For those of you not privy to the process, getting visas to enter the country was one of the most difficult things we've had to do for this trip. We had two options, join a tour for several thousand NZD (~4k for 12 days), or do it independantly & be a ... read more

So laeuft der Hase also. Also kein Ticket, ich fahre in die Stadt und versuche eine Bleibe zu finden. Diese finde ich ... read more

Well we have finally reached Siberia Irkutsk is a large industrial city whose biggest claim to fame is its proximity to Lake Baikal (The deepest lake in the world and home to 1/5th of the worlds freshwater). Arrived early morning and were immedately whisked to our Russian family for homestay (Although we technically never actually slept in the house). We were brought to what seemed to be a dodgy Soviet tower block (Which turned out to be really cosy) for a bite of breakfast and a shower. We were staying with Olga and her daughter Lucia. The house was near the city centre so we decided to go "sightseeing". Unfortunately Irkutsk is not overly endowed with sights and after a couple of Lenin statues, a river dam and an Orthodox Church we headed back to the ... read more

Day 104, 12th September 2001. Krasnojarsk We awoke late and set off from the boat at noon to find the hotel where Rory and Toby were staying. Yesterday, we couldn’t find a bike shop to get my wheel repaired and ended up being driven around the city by a guy determined to help us. We ended up at a car repair garage where two burly Russians man-handled my back wheel in order to get the spokes in I needed. This required grinding down the edge of the block so that spokes could be popped in. They charged nothing for their time… thanks guys! With my new spokes, the wheel felt better and we found the Hotel Kedr on the edge of the city. It was 300 roubles a double, no bad! Galina, the owner, could speak ... read more

Day 100, 8th September Tjainskij - Bogotol I awoke with the mother of all hangovers, with no water to drink. Today is the 100th day on the road since leaving England on 1st June - and nearly every day I’ve had a bloody hangover, will I ever learn? It was lucky that there was a café only a mile down the road. I had to drink three coffees and take four aspirin to feel halfway right again. And after 20 miles cycling there was another “PING”! Another spoke had broken sending my back wheel well out of shape, it was going to be another one of those days. We spent over an hour at the roadside adjusting the spokes to get it about right to cycle on again. Scott helped with the weight and took my ... read more

Eek! Snow. Appreciate it's supposed to be cold in Siberia, but the white stuff is not due for another month and we are due to spend a night in a tent. We say goodbye to our train in Irkusk, and go in search of thermal pants. We are staying for three nights, one camping by lake Baikal and two with a lovely Russian lady Alexandra, who does a mean line in dumplings. Drive to beautiful lake Baikal to meet our trek guide, an impressive survival expert, we will call Ray Meers-ski, who insists he does not need to sleep in a tent, despite the snow. Paul and I spend a very cold night camping on a beach and cooking on an open fire. Our friends however, saw the man in question back in the local town ... read more
