Took an unbelievable journey through the remotest part of the world I've ever been in. The tiring, back breaking last few days went something like this: June 29: overnight train ride from Krasnoyarsk to Abakan, 9 hours June 30: share taxi from Abakan train station to Kyzyl, 5½ hours, spent one night in Kyzyl July 1: UAZ (burly Russian 4x4 van) to Mugur-Aksy, 10 hour trip after spending 3 hours picking up passengers and another 2 hours tinkering with the vehicle's engine, spent one night in Mugur-Aksy July 2: short 2 hour trip to Kyzyl-Khaya again by UAZ from where I thought I'd catch another UAZ to Altai, eventually did at 7 pm with same driver, arrived in Kosh-Agach at 1:00 am but gained an hour, spent 2 nights July 4: 8 am minibus to Gorno-Altaisk, ... read more

We arrived in Novosibirsk late in the evening and we went to our hostel that we booked prior to leaving Moscow. The size of the city we could observe from the train really surprised us. How on earth such a big city can exist in the middle of nowhere? We became very curious of what is the main industry of this place for it to be so big. We could not find anybody from CS in this town and there were only 3 hostels available so we did not have to think long. Cheapest would do. We had a plan to drop our bags and go back to the city centre to have some dinner. In the hostel we met a nice French guy – Cyril - and we were asked by the administrator if we ... read more

Foreword Altai is a mountain range in Russia. The mountains are not as high as the Himalayas, but they offer plenty of possibilities for tourism and active rest. You will find the general information about Altai somewhere in the Internet. My idea was to join an organized group of tourists on the route called “Kolban and Kuiguk: Route for Men of Spirit” (the word “men” means here human beings of both sexes); groups are invited there each year on different routes. Please visit www.altaystrannik.ru for more information. The site is in Russian. I had this idea somewhere in April or May. Why did I decide to go there? I found an advertisement about tourism on Altai in some group of the popular Russian social network “vkontakte”. I found it cheap and rather interesting, and almost at ... read more

This place is really hard to get to one, that's why it's unique. After 5-7 km of mounting hiking you will get to the marvelous seven-lakes valley framed with circus of the Iolgo ridge. Karakolsky Lakes have a glacier-tectonic origin. The lowest lake is situated at 1800 m above sea level, the highest one is at almost 2100 m, and it is considered to be healing... The higher the lakes are, the smaller and colder they get. The length o f the biggest lake is 440 m, and width is 350 m. Cold and pure streams are connecting all the lakes, giving the Sun no chances to warm the water up. There are just few types of water plants and no fish at all. The best View point is the snowy top of the mountain circus. ... read more

At 8 am the 17th of September we started our photo trip through the Altai to the four countries border - Warm Key Pass. Two Mitsubishi Delicas took on ten people - three crew members and seven photographers, colored trunks with equipment and jerry cans with water on the roofs. We overcame 680 km in the first day and stopped beyond the Chike-Taman Pass for the night. During ten days of the expedition rain caught us just once - in the first night, all the rest time we enjoyed the good weather. First morning in the mountains - the white snow peaks are shining under the sunlight sincethe rain turns into the snow at the higher altitude. Olivier showed several techniques of using reflectors and shooting pictures for magazines while guides made breakfast and bundled camps. ... read more
