The journey to Moscow took four and a quarter hours. My train was almost luxurious; soft maroon sofa-style chairs, a green marble design table and cream silk curtains that matched the carpet. If Elton John designed Russian first class train compartments they would look something like this. Because it was so early I slept for most of the way but I woke up for a cup of coffee - which a girl took through the carriages in an urn, with the rest of the refreshments in a supermarket trolley. I got to Moscow Yaroslavskaya station at half past eleven. I had agreed to meet my pen-pal, Anastasiya, there. She is an English student from Ukraine, who had helped me with my Russian before I moved to Yaroslavl. We agreed to meet when I arrived in Russia: ... read more

This is another try at adding some photos. They will include shots from Moscow where we visited Bea (a former student) and her husband Vasily. There will be a few from Meteora, Greece. This is the site of many 17th century monasteries. Our trip concluded in Switzerland and you will see some of our favorite mountain locations.... read more

Thank you and goodbye.... We wanted to start this off with a big thank you to all our friends, families and colleagues who helped us prepare for this trip and who sent us off in style. We will miss you and look forward to catching up with you during the next year either in person or if you have the time through this blog or by email. First stop. St Petersburg Venice of the North. What a fantastic city. Artchitecture, Art, Canals and plenty of Lada's - the Russian motoring icon and some even pimped. Xzibit and Westwood look out. Beatch. The city is very Westernised, gave us a gentle introduction to Russia and would be a great place to visit for that long weekend. Thankfully English was occaisionally used so the locals only had to ... read more

Como ... read more

Hi all Yesterday I took the train from Helsinki to St Petersburgh. When I arrived, the helpful woman at the train station suggested I take the metro into the city. Now that is an experience.. very few people speak English, there are 33 letters in the Russian alphabet.. it was an adventure ensuring I was going the right direction first of all and then to get off at the right stop.. well I made it with surprisingly few problems.. really Today was busy busy as my time here is short.. I went to Palace Square and into the Hermitage.. or Winter Palace. It was so amazing.. the rooms were absolutely beautiful. I was thrilled.. The gold covered banquet room, the throne room, all of the rooms were just awesome. AND the art.. I LOVE Picasso and ... read more

I'm in Time Online, Moscow's biggest and most famous netcafe. Billy Idol's 'Rebel Yell' is pumping on the stereo and I've just spent half an hour waiting for two skater boys with hardly any English to get my wi-fi working on my laptop. Finally they called in a guy who I knew was top brass because he was wearing a tie pin, and he sorted me out. So without further ado, Day 1, September 9th Day 1 was bureaucratic and arduous and has no pictures, but it does have a quite funny menu, so bear with me. Shamanic journeys often start with a difficult bit that you have to overcome by force of will in order to get to the good bit. Well, Siberia is full of shamans, so it figures that this one starts off ... read more

...But now it's day 3 and I'm heading off on the Trans-Siberian Railway to Irkutsk in just a few hours. I'll be on the train for four days. I'm stupidly excited about this. I am a train geek, yes. But if there's a netcafe over there by Lake Baikal I'll be able to post about the great day we had yesterday in Moscow. Propaganda! War stories! The House of Tears! Lenin's waxen corpse! The Heroes of Communism! Havah Nagilah! And hopefully some pictures too... ... read more
