"I believe! Something will happen! It cannot not happen, because for what, indeed, has lifelong torment been sent to me? I admit that I lied and deceived and lived a secret life, hidden from people, but all the same the punishment for it cannot be so cruel…Something is bound to happen, because it cannot be that anything will go on for ever…” -M. Bulgakov
I am not sure, what would our country do without its great people? Similarly, I don't know what would Russia do without St. Petersburg. This city served an important role in out history and inspired hundreds of writers for their world-famous stories, poems and plays. Poetry is the most essential part of St. Petersburg - here you can find apartment-museums of great writers, coffee shops dedicated to them and reading clubs. The atmosphere of creativity and art in the air will impress even those who are not interested in literature too much 😊
This summer, as every other one, I am going to visit my grandmother
"Piter", how Russians like to call it, is a truly European city. It was a capital of Russia for many years which is why almost every Russian emperor was buried here. The city itself includes some of the most amazing architecture and nature: Winter and Summer Gardens, Petergof, Hermitage and of course cathedrals... MANY CATHEDRALS :D
If you ever decide to visit Saint Isaac's Cathedral and you are a christian, you will most likely to see a long line to some image inside.. Well, many tourists don't know this, but I
will tell you the big secret - that line is leading to the image of The Virgin, which is widely known among Russians for having a strong power. You can ask her for anything you want or tell her anything that bothers you - she will help you. I have met people who have seen their good-hearted wishes come true. People are coming from all over the country to ask her image for health, love and well being.
The most beautiful and impressive cathedrals are probably the following three:
- Church of the Savior on Blood (and don't forget an ISIC card if u are a student for free entrance!)
- St. Isaac's Cathedral (miraculous image of The Virgin)
- Kazan Cathedral (where you can see the panoramic view of the city, but try to go early because it gets SUPER busy)
Transportation. The centre of the city is pretty logical and getting around is simple. The subway is not as complicated as, let's say, in Moscow. Taxis are also good method of transportation and they are not too expensive, comparing again to Moscow. The big issue here is that people do not speak much
English. Though, there are always lots of international tourists and, comparing to Moscow subway, signs in Piter's subway are all in English 😊
Food. St. Petersburg is also famous for bakery so having a nice breakfast at the cafeteria is a good idea. But try to find one that doesn't look too catchy (this way it will be cheaper :D). The one I visited when I was there with my family was by the Moika River, on Nevski Prospekt, in front of the pink building.. I can't remember the name unfortunately. It is pretty cheap and you can pick what you want yourself. To eat, downtown is pretty expensive but I really enjoy "Kroshka Kartoshka". It is a chain restaurant that has many locations around the city. They mainly sell a delicious plate of large baked potato and you can fill it in with traditional Russian salads on your choice. It is really delicious, cheap and quite healthy!
Last thing I suggest - dress warm, even if you feel like it's not cold outside. St. Petersburg weather is rainy and cold. Even when in Moscow it is +30 C, in Piter it can be just close to +20
C (That is what happened to me this time!!)
